There isn't enough information to explain it yet.
Edit: maybe the pics showed them counterfeiting $20 dollar bills? |

I'm no fan of either, but you can't miss the press.
Brangelina went to Namibia for the childbirth. The Namibian government, assisting them by protecting their privacy, declared unauthorized taking of photos to be illegal. Enough security precautions were taken such that you would be trespassing or breaching privacy if you managed to get photos. Angelina Jolie is a big figure in world politics in the field of outreach programs. If I'm not mistaken she holds a title of Ambassador. This makes her no ordinary celebrity. Since the photos were taken in Namibia, a crime was committed. Hence investigation. If there was a request from the Namibian government, the FBI is the body that handles it in the US. |

So why are the secret service involved? I'm not very familiar with the area of responsibility of your secret service. If you refer to the CIA, then it may be because it's effectively an international matter and would at least have some representative accompany the FBI. |

Someone took pictures of them in Africa... the FBI and Secret Service shows up to confiscate them for "an investigation." Evidently a brother took pics of them and the new baby, and came home to the US with the camera -- there was a prob with the camera, and the brother took it in to get it fixed. At that point, the camera disappeared, and pics started showing up online that could be traced to the brother's camera. The authorities traced the IP of the person who posted the pics, raided the house/whatever, and retrieved the stolen camera. _____________________

Maybe this falls under telecommunications or computer fraud? What types of crimes does the Secret Service investigate? The Secret Service has primary jurisdiction to investigate threats against Secret Service protectees; counterfeiting of U.S. currency or other U.S. Government obligations; forgery or theft of U.S. Treasury checks, bonds or other securities; credit card fraud; telecommunications fraud; computer fraud; identify fraud; and certain other crimes affecting federally insured financial institutions. http://www.secretservice.gov/faq.shtml _____________________

Waaaaitaminit .... Secret Service protectees ... that might include A-list celebrities. I remember that some years back Russell Crowe was advised by the secret service regarding kidnap threats.
It also does look like it falls under computer fraud too. |
