I have of late--but wherefore I know not--lost all my mirth, that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory, this most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours.

Wow. What a nasty cop! They obviously need to make the crosswalk give people more time. When systems are no longer created for people, but people are asked instead to conform to systems (potentially at the loss of life and limb) then you know something has gone far afield.

This reminded me of a time in college when I was visiting my grandmother. I was going for a walk to run a few errands at a strip mall I could see from her window, and she started giving me these strangely convoluted directions on getting there -- having me purposely avoid crossing one particular intersection. Later on I realized it was because she was unable to cross that intersection within the time span of the light and in her mind had made the leap (maybe to protect herself from facing one more of the realities of aging) that nobody could get across fast enough. Made me sad for her.

As the US population ages, this is going to be another one of the issues we will start seeing change -- a whole lot of baby boomers are going to start slowing down!

Jinx sent me this in email. Another reason he's so groovy. It shows this older woman trying to cross while a dude is beeping at her. She gives him what-for tho.

Something like this actually happened to me in Huntington Bch CA. Corner of Beach and Warner. They barely give you time to cross without having to run. The light was yellow so I started a few seconds before the walk sign came up to get a head start and the cop gave me a ticket for obstructing traffic, even tho there were no cars coming. The judge laughed tho' and I got out of paying a fine but still, they should give you a little more time. If it had been the little old lady, she would have been stuck halfway across.

Hugh Hefnor turned 80 recently.

"Octogenarian" always made me think of some alien or undersea being.

As in, "Run! The Octogenarians are invading!"
