I was amused at a post in General questioning why someone would complain about not having enough money to support a child / children but spend money and/or time in SL. I'm less questioning the time, since everyone needs some relaxation time, but yeah... (Assuming SL is a negative money flow for the person, if it's a side job, then that's a good thing, right?)
Anyway, the poll I'm posting is to see what things are *NOT* okay to spend money on before paying child support / paying for children's needs in the absense of child support (or dead-beat parent not paying.)
EDIT: I managed to screw it up for a third time, but this is minor --- just ignore: "Poll Options A" ehheheh

Okay, as for my opinion, I voted for all but high-speed internet. It's so essential nowadays, I equate it with my phone bill. I nearly voted for cable -- I've seen people living in a run down shack who have satellite TV but no running water, but this is about my own opinion, so ... whatever.

AND how can 4 people have voted an SL account an ok thing, but no one internet, when its multiple choice? I'd say SL is pretty much DEFINATLY not ok if you don't have the internet to use it

Ok, my third try at a response Mr. Pollmaker lol
All of those things listed are not necessities, helping to take care of a child that they created is...well should be. There are people who take better care of their animals than some do of their own flesh and blood, which is rather sad when you think about it.

Heck, taking the right care of your dog is more important than anything listed, and I would hope that the kid is more important than the dog.

I nearly voted for cable -- I've seen people living in a run down shack who have satellite TV but no running water, but this is about my own opinion, so ... whatever. Guess that depends on what you use the internet for. I know many people that manage just fine without high-speed for day to day tasks. I personally find the internet a great resource for both myself and my children so I don't feel that selfish about the cost. If my kid's dad was paying for highspeed internet for pure entertainment but not covering part of the cost of our children's needs then I would be upset. Other than that, I could care less what he wants to spend his money on as long as he takes care of his children as well. Interesting to note ... after my husband and i separated ... our last tax return that we split -- I bought a new washer and dryer for myself and the kids. He bought a big ass TV and Xbox for HIMSELF. Did I care? No, but I did think it was pretty indicative of where our priorities are based.

Well as you mentioned before, the internet/SL/tier expenditure can be seen quite differently if one is earning money in SL or dumping money into it only for pure entertainment, which I agree, has value.
I'm on an extremely limited budget myself, no one else to support, but let's say I had a kid or a pet, unless SL was providing more than it's expense and then some, I'd cut back on any or all of the items you've listed there until the dire straits-type crisis had passed. Frankly, if SL were the source of income for the theoretical person in question, they'd already have the money for the kid to eat. If the parent was attempting to use SL to earn that essential money and was yet short, they'd need to think it over, or wait until they had a little more of a backlog of resources to tide them over the "start up" period for the SL business.
One cannot eat dreams, and must be practical in business whether a brick and mortar biz, a VR world enterprise or the business of running a household/caring for a child. All three undertakings need to satisfy a balance between costs and benefits, return on investment, etc. If you're spending more than you earn and don't have resources to carry you over the lean times, do something less risky, please!
All that being said, my time in SL is run on a zero cost basis. Although I bought my initial basic memberships and pay for my one premium, the biz in here covers that and the station, so I'm comfortable with the "outlay" as I profit in even expense and entertainment gained. Wouldn't do it anyother way unless I had the money to toss around and not miss it.

I think it's funny that Hiro equates a date with phone sex.

From: Max Case I think it's funny that Hiro equates a date with phone sex. Ha! What happened was I ran out of choices, and thought I'd keep them together for the humor value.

I am on a budget at the moment (ok, ALL of the friggen time...) and I only buy L's when hubby and I agree that we will not be spending the money we budgeted for "fun" on anything else that month. I only spend 20.00 at a time, so if we DO decide to go see or rent a movie, we have a few bucks for that.
IF it isn't necessary for you to live, then don't spend money on it. I had a "father" that didn't pay child support when me and my brother were growing up. He actually hid and moved from state to state and refused to work to get around paying it. Now he has three other kids with another woman and SHE works full time to support them since my mom is still after his butt for the back support.
