Stupid. There are better, more accurate, yet terse ways to describe such things without silly acronyms.
'pipe bomb' 'car bomb' 'tnt vest' 'bomb vest' 'nail grenade' 'your mom' 'bomb pie' 'Kevin Costner' 'fuck!' 'the thing, ya know?' etc.

It's another bit of military jargon that CNN presenters can use to make themselves feel all big and tough.
I dunno, maybe the army has a reason to distinguish between "blown up by a landmine" and "blown up by a shell rigged to a tripwire". Not being a military person myself, the first two words are more important to me.
