There was an event listed today for a discussion on "What it's ike to be from the North" or something like that. I was thinking it was the difference between northerners and southerners in the US.
It was actually a discussion about different regions(?) of Gor and the customs there. At least I think that is what it was about. I do have a notable amount of ignorance on the issue. I decided to stay and listen.
So there was a question and answer with one of the slave girls providing answers after leading a discussion on slave customs and slave life. (again, forgive me if I am poorly paraphrasing the content)
I was shocked at the way the men talked about the women. The discussion turned to ways one could punish their women. Tying them to a boat oar was mentioned. After which the men in the audience joked about using their slaves as trout bait.
It was pointed out that all slave women should try to please their men and if they failed they would be punished. Pleasing their men was not presented in the sexual sense but more of an overall serving.
This led me to ask my question. Are there any systems in place to intervene on behalf of a slave who is owned or being punished by a male who is honestly unfit to own a slave.
This could be someone who was mentally ill, deranged or just unusually cruel. What of the slave sold to a man that she would be unable to please no matter what the circumstance?
The response I received from the slave girl giving the presentation was that there existed no means of intervention. Slaves were considered to be animals and not worthy of such action. Admittedly, animal seems to be a step up from bait.
Is this really true? Given the comments in the discussion and the answer from the slave presenter, I found this to be believable.
How are free men regulated in Gor? Surely there cannot be an assumption among free men that all are equally fair and just. I expected an answer that a free man could openly challenge in battle another free man if he felt he was being unjust to his slaves, etc.

to a degree, they can. But choosing to hunt artic sea sleen by tying your bondmaid to an oar does not justify any such challenge - unless one makes a swords rights (canjellne) challenge..in which the winner takes the girl

Oh, they can. Just like my real-life friend can challenge me to a knife fight because I didn't keep my toaster clean. John Norman's work is based on the fundemental assumption that the sole reason women exist is to please men, and that they are to be considered property. I might get some funny looks if I tied my toaster to an oar and held it underwater for burning my toast, but no-one would intervene to save the toaster. Same with slaves in Gor. My advice is leave them alone to play out their little power games. The inability of Goreans in SL to interact reasonably with outsiders in legendary so just pass whatever judgement on them you like, mumble something about "consenting adults" and move on with your life.

I don't judge them for their roleplay. Whatever they want to do it their business if they are consenting adults. (as you point out)
I was just surprised. I had a different understanding from the literature presented in the sims. Admittedly, I have not read any of the books and was working from limited knowledge.
