These forums should be about how to create, use , and buy the products the developers make, problems with the Second Life software development system, desired changes to the Second Life software development system, and nothing more.
People who want to have private conversations on any topic of their choice using any language of their choice should do so privately.
Riling people up because you enjoy making others unhappy is bad for business, and just a bar will throw out a troublemaking drunk, so should the management at Linden Lab throw out the chronic hatemongers.
Those who wish to do business here should be left to do so in peace.

I don't know if I totally agree with that, Invect. Second Life isn't just a platform, it's a community. I agree that we shouldn't be talking about what kinds of pie Torley likes in the Technical Issues forum, but I also think that we need a place to just talk, have fun, discuss issues, and enjoy each other's virtual company. I've enjoyed bulletin board posting since before Al Gore invented the Internet....and I think it'd be a shame to sterilize the conversation in these forums to simple technical specs.

If your assumption about the forums were correct, they wouldn't have any off topic ones and it would be moderated very differently. However, your assumption is wrong. People wanting PRIVATE conversations probably do so privately. The forum is supposed to be an extension of the community, a place to discuss things outside of the private conversations in Second Life. What, every time I want to discuss something with people I've never met inworld from different timezones we're supposed to arrange a formal get together to chat so we don't bug the likes of you?  The forums allow people to throw out ideas, opinions and challenges to a community of likeminded people for public responses. That's not a private act. It's, like, exactly what forums are for, in fact! And believe it or not, while we may all have Second Life as a common thread of interest, we don't actually have to talk exclusively about it all the time! Even here! My suggestion: if you dislike the forums so much... don't read them! |
