I don't know how many people read the Bad Astronomy blog, but there is an interesting post for anyone who lives in the USA ... and as we try to follow along like sheep behind you, probably anyone in the UK too.

...the government has been trying to "kill" us for centuries...or should i say"groups" of us...just look at the recipe...aspartame - poison marketed as a sweetener. Apparently, it was once listed by the pentagon as a biochemical warfare agent.

fluoride - have you been drinking bitter water? Did you know that fluoride has been used as a pesticide and rodenticide? As a waste product of the A-bomb, the first lawsuits from the atomic bomb program were fought over fluoride poisoning. In an attempt to keep the program from being stalled, fluoride was presented to the public as an element beneficial to our bones.

Fluoride prevents tooth decay. So governments increased the amount of fluoride in our water supply. Yes, it's also poisonous in large doses.

But hey, what do I know? I'm just telling you what I read.

We all just read stuff these days. Does anybody really know anything?

Our government suggest boiling Artichokes for a little then baking them......

Maybe instead of trying to kill you they should buy a cook book

We had a case over here in the recent heatwave where a small child nearly died because of drinking too much water.

So is Oxygen - god I will have to stop breathing as well as not eating Artichokes and drinking water.

Actually, the BBC local news for Wednesday ran like this, basically:

zomgz its hot! look after yourselves! people are dying in this heat!
Water - We don't have any. Stop using it.
Or electricity. Stop using that too cuz the upsurge in people using fans and aircon is causing big problems.

Well maybe if you inject arsenic into bananas, you could die from eating too many bananas?.

Well dearest Starax, that depends what you do with said bananas! Not ALL bananas are for eating purposes - APPARENTLY.

Any idea how it prevents tooth decay? The body, recognising it as a poison, locks it into calcium and deposits around the body, as a way of making it inert. It has been linked to increased bone cancer, particularly in boys. And the tooth decay prevention only works if you get PRECISELY the right amount. Any more, you get mottled teeth and sometimes worse decay. Any less and it isn't effective.

As parents aren't generally given the information that flouride is a poison, they often take a more-is-better approach to it. I even knew a parent who encouraged her daughter to take a small amount of flouride toothpaste and eat it every time she went to the bathroom. She was horrified when I told her that a tube of flouride toothpaste has enough flouride in it to kill a small toddler.

Taking the view that it is better to mass medicate the population than to educate them properly is a step towards totalitarian dictatorship and should be resisted even in the case of substances which seem on the surface to be benign.
