One of my favorite old movies is Brian DePalma's "The Phantom Of The Paradise," a 1974 cult favorite that combines old horror themes including The Phantom Of The Opera, The Picture Of Dorian Grey, and Frankenstein with an eclectic soundtrack that ranges from '50's doo-wop and surf music to glitter rock and a couple of really nice ballads. Anyone seen it?

Anyway, this song is kind of the one I indentify with.

So if you were going to choose a song to represent your "theme music," what would it be?

P2

The Hell Of It

Roll on thunder, shine on lightnin',

The days are long and the nights are frightnin',

Nothing matters anyway, and that's the hell of it.

Winter comes, and the winds blow colder,

Well, some grow wiser, you just grew older,

And you never listened anyway, and that's the hell of it.

Good for nothin', bad in bed,

Nobody liked you, and you're better off dead,

Goodbye, we've all come to say goodbye, goodbye.

Born defeated, died in vain,

Super destructive, you were hooked on pain,

And though your music lingers on,

All of us are glad you're gone...

If I could live my life half as worthlessly as you,

I'm convinced that I'd wind up burning too.

Love yourself as you love no other,

Be no man's fool, and be no man's brother,

We're all born to die alone,

Y'know, that's the hell of it.

Life's a game where they're bound to beat you,

And time's a trick they can turn to cheat you,

And we only waste it anyway,

And that's the hell of it.

Good for nothin', bad in bed,

Nobody liked you and you're better off dead,

Goodbye, we've all come to say goodbye,

Born defeated, died in vain,

Super destructive, you were hooked on pain,

And tho' your music lingers on

Well, all of us are glad you're gone...

"Soup Is Good Food"

We're sorry
But you're no longer needed
Or wanted
Or even cared about here
Machines can do a better job than you
This is what you get for asking questions

The unions agree
'Sacrifices must be made'
Computers never go on strike
To save the working man you've got to put him out to pasture

Looks like we'll have to let you go
Doesn't it feel fulfilling to know
That you-the human being-are now obsolete
And there's nothing in hell we'll let you do about it

[Chorus]
Soup is good food-(We don't need you any more)
You made a good meal-(We don't need you any more)
Now how do you feel-(We don't need you any more)
To be shit out our ass
And thrown in the cold like a piece of trash
We're sorry
You'll just have to leave
Unemployment runs out after just six weeks
How does it feel to be a budget cut?
You're snipped
You no longer exist

Your number's been purged from our central computer
So we can rig the facts
And sweep you under the rug
See our chart? Unemployment's going down
If that ruins your life that's your problem

Soup is Good Food, Etc.
We're sorry
We hate to interrupt
But it's against the law to jump off this bridge
You'll just have to kill yourself somewhere else
A tourist might see you
And we wouldn't want that

I'm just doing my job, you know
So say uncle
And we'll take you to the mental health zoo
Force feed you mind-melting chemicals
Til even the outside world looks great

In hi-tech science research labs
It costs too much to bury all the dead
The mutilated disease-injected
Surplus rats who can't be used anymore

So they're dumped (with no minister present)
In a spiraling corkscrew dispose-all unit
Ground into sludge and flushed away
Aw geez:.

Soup is good food
You made a good meal, etc:.
We know how much you'd like to die
We joke about it on our coffee breaks
But we're paid to force you to have a nice day
In the wonderful world we made just for you
"Poor Rats", we human rodents chuckle
At least we get a dignified cremation
And yet
At 6:00 tomorrow morning
It's time to get up and go to work

Silent Lucidity

Queensryche

Hush now don’t cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You’re lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is, another chance
Wide awake you face the day
Your dream is over...or has it just begun?

There’s a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run to in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn’t realize it and you were scared
It’s a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the tears
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly, you hear and see
This magic new dimension

Chorus
I-will be watching over you
I-am gonna help you see it through
I-will protect you in the night
I-am smiling next to you...in silent lucidity

If you open your mind for me
You won’t rely on open eyes to see
The walls you built within
Come tumblng down, and a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize
Your dream’s alive, you can be the guide but...
