I had heard that laptop was a hot little number.

I want to see one of those commercials where they talk about playing computer games. "Oh, that title isn't available for Macintosh" That would be MS's response if they had the balls but they don't. Those commercials could ALMOST be as entertaining as the Bud Light/Miller Lite campaigns. |

The article sites numbers for ALL laptops, remember, not just the iBook that someone was smart enough to take pictures of. (I'd say something about the smart person having a Mac, but they WEREN'T smart enough to use a fire extinguisher...)

You should see macbook though, it is so small, condensed, and leaves no room for heat exaust. When I first looked at the laptop I was like "where the heck is the vent to exaust heat when the fan goes on?", turns out it is hidden below right where the screen connects to the laptop. THe laptop looks amazing, runs nice, just heats up like the surface of the sun. |

You know, the sad truth is that even a Mac that bursts into flame works better than the average Windows PC.

I own a 17" MacBook Pro. The bottom of the computer does approach a temperature between warm and hot (hotish?) but it's nothing that could injure someone. This is by design, as the aluminum case itself is being used as a part of the laptop's cooling mechanism. The alternative would be to add internal heat sinks, heat pipes, and fans but that would require a fat, bulky design like the Dell. It's simply a trade off between thickness and case temperature. Given that it's not really that hot, I choose thickness.
Further, power consumption in computing devices is growing exponentially with the increase in transistor density. Clever fabrication techniques and lower voltages are offsetting this increase but their ability to offset it is limited logistically. As anyone who has tried to mitigate exponential growth with logistic attenuation knows, this solution is only temporary. In time it won't be possible to cary state-of-the-art chips in laptops at all. There will be mobile versions scaled back in transistor count, frequency, and voltage -- possibly from previous generations. (This is similar to how Apple used the G4 for laptops and the G5 for desktops before switching to Intel). ~Ulrika~ _____________________

They overclock famously. _____________________

THere are already lower-voltage, lower consumption components labelled for mobile use. They overclock famously. Conversely, power increases with transistor count exponentially and without bound. Thus, in time, techniques to lower power consumption will lag behind this growth. The result will be mobile chips which aren't just lower voltage versions but chips that lag one or more generations behind state-of-the-art desktop chips. Further, my computer monkey says that it won't be fabrication limitations that halt the exponential growth of computing power rather it will be the power requirements. Although, all of this is really off topic as I finally RTFA and I'm talking about something completely different. ![]() ~Ulrika~ _____________________
