I go both ways on "the" as well.

No. Locusts and cicadas are completely different, but cicadas are often colloquially referred to as locusts in some regions of the south.

I say both roof and ruf, melk and milk, but I don't say lemo. I also say duke as dyuke (which apparently correct if you're talking about an actual duke, as opposed to the school) when I remember.

also, "whether", I say hwether, if I remember. I had diction class as part of acting conservatory.
