A couple of facts:
1) Various individuals and organizations espousing Christianity and "traditional values" as their foundations currently dominate the Republican party and all branches of U.S. government, as well as myriad NGOs, all aggressively pushing "faith based" legislation and political campaigns.
2) Many openly Christian individuals are experiencing hostility from non-Christian and/or less actively Christian Americans, often their friends and family.
Do you see the connection here?
Christians, do you know any of the higher-ups in these political organizations? You can bet they all know each other, with one degree of separation at most. They share a common agenda for enacting federal, state, and local legislation, for electing officials, and for shaping the policies of corporations and civic organizations. Perhaps their motivation really is an abstract ethical principle, but in effect their successes exclude and limit the freedoms of those outside The Party.
As other threads have noted, the stamp of Christian Values creates a form of acceptable discrimination by which people who don't at least pay obeisance to the right brand of politically active Evangelism can be marginalized in their workplaces and communities. However possibly pure the motives of these theo-political activists, the result is a bigger lock on the gates of government, wealth, and influence in our society.
These actions are undertaken in the name of Christianity, and very few Christians are standing up to say, "Hey, wait, that's not my agenda."
It's time both sides stop reading from the Christians vs. Atheists script these people have written for us and look at the real problem: the aggressive, exclusionary political movement trying to buy the copyright on Christianity.

From: Marge Simpson Well, Bart, your uncle Arthur used to have a saying: "Shoot 'em all and let God sort 'em out." Unfortunately, one day put his theory into practice. It took 75 federal marshalls to bring him down. Now let's never speak of him again.
Well this is off topic

From: Zapoteth Zaius Isn't that a simpson quote? Pope Innocent III ordered the Albigensian Crusade, to purge southern France of the Cathari heretics. It began in the summer of 1209, with their first target - the town of Beziers. The Catholic faithful in Beziers refused to give up the Catharis among themselves. The crusaders invaded. When Arnaud-Amaury was asked whom to kill he replied "Kill them all. God will know his own." They did. The crusaders slaughtered nearly everyone in town, over 20,000, either burned or clubbed to death. Thus they achieved their goal of killing the estimated 200 heretics who were hiding in the town among the Catholic faithful. The brutal crusade continued on for the next twenty years. Eventually the Catholics devised a new approach for dealing with the remaining Cathari heretics in France. It was called "the Inquisition".

From: Zapoteth Zaius Isn't that a simpson quote? That quote has been around a lot longer than the Simpsons have. I don't know where it originated, but I remember seeing it on a bumper sticker back in the early 80's.
