Fark is crap.

I can't stand Fark, or most of its slobbering denizens.
There are few things more simultaneously hilarious and disheartening than watching one group of geeks mock another group for being....geeks. I hope someone pointed out that they are on the (nerd pioneered) internet, posting on a (nerd frequented) website? |

not to sound like a naysayer, but this whole entire article sounded like an ad. an ad for nerds. "come to second life, you can buy porn and play games at the same time!" another comment about sl
That game is so freaking buggy. I can't play it for more than a few minutes without my computer asploding. Neat concept, though. The graphics are impressive, but the game seems like it only appeals to people trying to make money or friends. Since I have an abundance of both a lack of both, I'll never play it I'll download it tonight and use my $25 christmas bonus to buy friends. I just downloaded it.. bored 5 minutes in. |

Kavak, if you're going to post things on other websites about SL, please work on your language skills... this post on Fark made us look like a bunch of illiterates. No offense intended. And for the record, something like L$2 million was raised for Katrina relief between the various events, which is equivalent to about US$8,000. P2 _____________________

A game review site I read religiously has an even funnier writeup of the subject.
(WARNING: Lots of advertisement crap if you don't have a good hosts file) http://gr.bolt.com/manifesto/view.php?id=114 XXX.exe Posted on Thursday, December 22 @ 14:24:31 Eastern by Joe_Dodson Among its blockbuster hits, hot coffee scandals, and legions of sequels, the video game industry birthed some of its weirdest offspring ever in 2005. But none of the year's twisted titles can hold a skull-shaped candle to the strange flame of Second Life - still the weirdest place in the virtual world. Playing Second Life is the virtual equivalent of having a secret life. Instead of (or perhaps as well as) visiting the brothels, gay bars and tranny shacks of the real world, Second Lifers let their digital freak flags fly, cavorting with bizarre avatars, playing out their weirdest fantasies in a space beyond the expectations of normality, cloaked in total anonymity. That part makes sense; after all, wanting to make love to fox headed Aphrodites in your spare time is certainly no weirder than yearning to crush gnomes with a hammer as a big, green Orc. An article in Wired, though, hipped us to a new Second Life craze that makes absolutely no sense at all - virtual porn. According to the article, a man named Thomas Struszka began an entirely in-game magazine called Slustler to feature the realm's denizens in risque and sexually explicit screenshots. Says Struszka, "I want people to be in the magazine as they are in-world, not as Playboy-styled, plastic products in exclusive packaging." Never mind the fact that the guy is a virtual pornographer. Never mind that even he thinks Playboy is too artificial. The most mind-bendingly perverse phenomenon in the video game industry is the fact that the guy sells his work to other people in-game. Even in their fantasies, people buy porn. _____________________

Yea, the idea being they like to shut down or remove anything that may have "adult" activities that could also be accessed by minors. GTA

I can't stand Fark, or most of its slobbering denizens. There are few things more simultaneously hilarious and disheartening than watching one group of geeks mock another group for being....geeks. . . . Well, technically I'm not a Fark denizen, and I agree with you about the "slobbering" part but only for about 1/2 the farkers. However, I find it as one of the most useful sites for serendipitous discovery o' stuff on the web. I actually linked to the WIRED article about Slustler via Fark, and found out about SL and joined yesterday (NOOB tatooed on forehead). Hey, if I want porn, virtual or real, there's lots easier ways to get it. The broader WIRED discussion of SL was more intriguing than the mention of Slustler. Fark has led me to lots of valuable sites (everything2.com, Lego Porn, and Neopets). I'm finding the real downfall of Fark is the politicization of many of the postings, e.g., HERO - Bush smacks down pussy libruls. My 2 cents. _____________________

Actually, the discussion in the Fark thread about Second Life made it sound interesting enough to download, which is what I did. I'm still just starting out, but it looks like the creation/scripting is awesome. Any tips on where I can find info/tutorials on creating items/scripts?

O Valerie, a very warm welcome to SL to you... here in the SL Forums there's actually a Scripting Tips section which is some of what you're looking for! There's an LSL Scripting Wiki as reference guide with some tutorials, should you want to look into that. A casual thing I highly recommend is hang out in Sandboxes (Sandbox Cordova, Sandbox Goguen, Sandbox Newcomb, Morris, Sandbox Island, etc.) and watch other Resis build. If you're intrigued by anything in particular, observe them go about their craft live, and ask some questions. Then you give it a spin! There's also a Building forum here. It depends on your style of learning.

It's real funny. Fark has a reputation as being the retarded idiot half-cousin of Something Awful. At least SA Goons, for better or worse, actively participate or engage in SL while it looks like most of those Fark posters just sit on the sidelines and retread the same old tired jokes.
