After reading news about Second Life, I found that many are making money here, selling and buying. I can picture buying stocks and information but I don't understand the shopping experience or some news used the word, "virtual Ebay". As far as I understand, many are buying digital clothes or designs. Are they selling real goods like ebay would. If I shop, would I get the real thing in the mail. I would like to know how I would earn money on Second Life.

Most everything that is sold in SL is for use within SL. Clothing and accessories for SL avatars, buildings and vehicles, etc. These are virtual goods for use in a virtual world.

I ”live” in SL using my ava.. and of course I want to look good in SL as IRL. so I shop.. and as i have a home - my home as IRL shall look good to.. so I shop... and build.. design and sell to other s that shop...

I cant eat in SL but I can make (shop) a nice diner table with food (as I shop) and all - and invite my GF.. and we chat instead...

Thats the business.. and its fun...very fun.. and I get a lot inspired by talking with my GR and friends in SL to.. thats lovely and for free.-))

I've heard talk about offering real world versions of clothes bought in SL, but as far as I know there's nobody selling real world items via SL. I'm not even sure if you're allowed to in the TOS.

Generally if you shop in SL you get virtual goods.

As for making money, personally I wouldn't recommend it - do it as a hobby, but don't expect to get anything other than a couple off beers from it. :)

Oh, and ways of making money:
  1. Making virtual products and selling them
  2. Dealing in land
  3. Attracting lots of people to your land so LL gives you money
  4. Absolutely anything else you can think of (that's the hard part)

Ah, that should have been a far better post. I blame starvation... ;)
Must... go... cook... food...

real money?

So. Can I teach and give professional advice in exchange for real money? Whats really going on with my credit card? Am I giving SL permission to bill or recieve real money? I'm confused. When I pay, is it possible for SL to bill me? Or can one pay me on SL and it goes to my credit card?

How they use credit card

SL will first use your credit card to bill any monthly fee that you have. Then it bills you any land fee that you have. If you have game money and you have converted that to real money then it will deduct that money first before it charges your credit card.

IF you are on a free account and have no monthly fees then it will not charge you for anything. Just convert game money to real money and "cash" out. I use my game money to pay for my montly fee and never realy cash out so i dont know how that process works. To me, all my work is paying my monthly fee so i get more then a basic account and still not pay for anything. When i say cash out, what i mean is that you will be putting your money in the market. It works very much like a stock market only it uses Lindens. IF you put out 10,000L then someone needs to buy it before you can get your money. How long this takes will depend on the curent exchange rate. For me, it only took 24 hours.

Yes you can teach what you want although I have rarely seen anyone do this. The only teaching I have seen are sponsored by the game about biulding and related things. It seems to me that a fair number of peole go to them so there is a posibility that some will go to yours. Also know that to host an event you need land or someone that is willing to host you (100L per event). You can skip this by just puting billboars at some vendors and I recomend you do that. 100L per week with a billboard is better then 100L for a 1 hour event.

Please feel free to message me ingame if you have questions.

It's definitely possible to make money, however you should know something about the reality of our micro-economy. A lot of people work for free (or give free things away) and basic accounts only get L$50/month, so I think those two things combine to make prices generally very low. As in $L100-200 for most clothing items, with specialty designs going for maybe $1000. Custom homes are typically built in the four-figure range. So that means US$1.00-1.50 for many clothes to US$20 for a custom built house.

Structure your business model with that in mind and have realistic expectations.
