Yesterday, my computer froze while I was using Firefox, and I had to do a forced shutdown. Somehow as a result, Firefox lost its ability to customize. All my custom toolbars are gone, and the configuration has returned to default. I can re-customize, but the changes do not save. As soon as I close the program and restart it, it reverts back to default settings.
What's even stranger is that Firefox is no longer willing to be controled by nView. I use dual monitors, and nView is set to launch each program on whichever monitor it was last used on, meaning if I move a window from the left monitor to the right one and then close it, the next time it opens it will start on the right. Also nView remembers the size of the last window each program used and makes sure they launch at that size next time. For some reason though, Firefox is now opening only on the left monitor, and only at its default window size.
I have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox 3 times now, and I've re-installed my graphics driver once, but nothing has changed. With the last uninstall, I even went so far as to scan my registry and my hard drive for every instance of the words "Mozilla" and "Firefox", and I deleted them all before re-insalling. No change.
Perhaps the most bizarre part of the whole thing is that despite my file and registry cleanup, Firefox will not behave as if it's a new installation. All my bookmarks are still there, even though I specifically deleted the folder that contained them. I'm assuming whatever is causing the bookmark information to be retained is the same thing that's causing the damage to customization and graphics to be retained as well. Something really, really weird is happening. Anyone have any thoughts on what this might be, and how to fix it?
If I don't figure out a solution soon, I'll probably end up wiping my hard drive and starting over with fresh installations of everything. I do that every 6 months or so anyway, and it's getting to be about time again so maybe this is a sign. That's gonna take a full day though, and I really don't feel like doing all that work, so if anyone has any ideas, please speak up. Thanks.
