I think it would gut the MMORPG industry and general gaming industry.
Those industries, combined, are larger than the entire telecommunications industry.
I think as it came closer to fruition, companies like Sony, Konami, Square-Enix, CCP, LL, Bethesda, Bioware, Bungie, and Microsoft would swoop in and stripmine the telecom industry by establishing subsidiaries that provided old-world internet service.
