from MSNBC:
Iraqi Woman raped before she and her family were killed and burned
U.S. soldiers allegedly first raped a female member of the family, then burned the bodies in the March incident, an official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.
A U.S. official close to the investigation said at least one of the soldiers, all assigned to the 502nd Infantry Regiment, has admitted his role and has been arrested.
Two soldiers from the same regiment were slain this month when they were kidnapped at a checkpoint near Youssifiyah.
The official said the accused soldiers were from the same platoon as the two slain soldiers, whose bodies were mutilated. He said the mutilation of the slain soldiers stirred feelings of guilt and led at least one of them to reveal the rape-slaying on June 22.
The killings appear to have been a “crime of opportunity,” the official said. The soldiers had not been attacked by insurgents but had noticed the woman on previous patrols.

Keep on winnin those hearts and minds, Fightin 502nd!

I was going to say something about destroying the evidence, but this is just sick. The saddest bit is the punishment will probably be light if at all.

Also, at least 66 PEOPLE are KILLED and about 100 injured in a car bomb attack on a Baghdad market today.
What a mess. It was safer to go shopping in Baghdad when evil dictator Saddam was in charge, but at least the poor people live a democracy now.

Can we stop all the threads titled "Where are the outraged XXXX's now?" Please?
This is a horrific crime and shouldn't be used to attack one's political opponents. It may be useful to discuss the crime and what it means to the war. It may be useful to ask how this could have happened, to question US policy (from the right or the left), but using it to claim that your opponents aren't showing proper outrage is just wrong.
I'm not saying that it's wrong to use this as an example of how the war has gone wrong (or was wrong from the start) or to point out the damage the war has done to our relations in the Muslim world and to our efforts to gain cooperation in the war on terror. But to assume that the people on the right aren't outraged at the rape and murder of a young woman and the subsequent murder of her family simply because you haven't seen them post a thread saying so is absurd. Now if some jingoistic moron makes such a statement in a posting, by all means go after him. But the false premise that because you haven't seen a thread posting here by either the left or the right that that means they don't care or aren't outraged by a certain atrocity is more propaganda than argument.

while those 'headline' jokes wear thin very quickly...

... i really, really, really, -really- can't get enough of rubbing in the idea to those who need it... ISSUE POLARIZATION/ASSUMPTIONS ARE TOO EASY, TOO PRESUMPTIVELY INSULTING to your audience. there was one, the 'first thread', to remain nameless. one 'joke' one since then, now this one... three may be enough. dunno. have to wait and see. have to disagree with the earlier - these soldiers probably will face a harsh sentence if convicted. have to hope so... first report i read, sounded like they were -stalking- her... >>> ((
