With the aid of electrodes implanted in his brain, a man paralyzed from the neck down was able to perform certain everyday activities - move a computer cursor, open e-mail, turn on a TV set - merely by imagining them.

This has some incredible implications for SL. I wonder if you could hook up the same thing to a car, for instance...

Totally OT...

...but I feel someone simply has to make the painfully obvious crack about thinking this thread was going to cover an entirely different kind of implant.

Reminds me... I happened to bump into this awfully well-endowed young lady in the supermarket the other day. (You know the kind - looking like a stick insect shot through the back with two cruise missiles).

Well she was wearing a T-shirt that said "Guess" on it. So I said "Implants?"

Damn near broke my feckin' jaw.

This is fantastic! A very good friend that I worked with for years has a son who when he was 22 years old decided to hop on a friends motorcycle and take it on a test drive around the block. Because he was just going around the block he did not put a helmet on and even if he had, I don’t know that it would have mattered with the kind of crash he had. He became a quadriplegic in an instant.

One of the things that he said was “if I could just move ONE HAND! It would make such a difference!” My hope is that technology like this will find it’s way to him someday. I hear from his Dad periodically and his Dad says he has a strong spirit and has married a wonderful woman. This sort of thing could make such a difference in his life.
