Sounds like the L.A. Riots to me. America has their own problems with racism in the police force. Maybe America should see what it has led to in France and start working on cleaning up our own police force.

From: Jamie Bergman I didnt realize the LA riots spread throughout the nation. Hmm, did the riots in France spread throughout the nation, or was there a list of cities it said were not frequented by tourist. Are these cities bigger than L.A when combined?

From: Jamie Bergman I didnt realize the LA riots spread throughout the nation. Just because it hasn't been that big here, doesn't mean it can't get that big. We certainly have rough times ahead thanks to George Bush and mother nature hitting us with costly things at the same time. Its not a huge leap of imagination to think about what may happen to America as taxes raise and poverty increases combined with the problems similar to the ones described in France with our police forces. Just because our incident was smaller in the past, doesn't mean a bigger one couldn't occur here in the future. On a side note, with the extended tours of duty, men being called back to duty after being discharged, and purple hearts going through court martials in the military today; do you think that more deranged people are in society than say during the time of Timothy McVeigh.

My third son moved to Paris in September. Ten days ago he was singing its praises as the safest most harmonious capital he has ever seen, with absolutely no drunken behaviour or violence or conflict on the streets.
Now HE's embarassed. He lives and teaches in a nice bit (international school).

From: Leilany LaFollette Riots can happen anywhere : hrug:: Yeah, but this one seems to be a direct result of French society being rather hostile to "foreigners". From the accounts I've read it seems that French society doesn't really assimilate new cultures/ideas very well, as opposed to the US, which, while far from perfect, does a decent job of (eventually) assimilating people and absorbing their take on the world. Within a generation or two, people are more likely to call themselves Americans, regardless of their grandparents (or parents)' heritage, while still keeping a lot of traditions and cultural marks from the "old country". Almost everything in American culture is borrowed. This is a result of a society politely ignoring the problems it faces, and the result is apparently pretty violent. Also pretty shocking that this is going on 2 weeks of constant rioting... LF

I don't understand how this would be a national embarrassment, other than the possibility that you hate the French irrationally like the rest of the US?

From: Lordfly Digeridoo Yeah, but this one seems to be a direct result of French society being rather hostile to "foreigners". True, but still not surprising. The French have never hidden their distaste of almost everybody else, even if they are 3rd. generation French. From: Lordfly Digeridoo From the accounts I've read it seems that French society doesn't really assimilate new cultures/ideas very well, as opposed to the US, which, while far from perfect, does a decent job of (eventually) assimilating people and absorbing their take on the world. I'm afraid I don't agree with you there There's a lot of hostility in this country towards foreigners. Even before 9/11. Which is stupid... considering everybody here comes from somewhere else, except for the natives. From: Lordfly Digeridoo Within a generation or two, people are more likely to call themselves Americans, regardless of their grandparents (or parents)' heritage, while still keeping a lot of traditions and cultural marks from the "old country". True But americans still see them as *something else / americans*, so there's always that feeling of not quite fitting in Leilany

Well our own National embarrassment lives right in the White House. Since we're on the topic of France lets not forget how a great world leading assembly renamed French Toast and French Fries, "Freedom Toast" and "Freedom Fries" because a certain country wouldn't buy into our now proven pack of lies to go into an unjustified war. I'm just glad there are still a few countries with the courage and dignity to stand up for what is right and not follow along like sheople.
If you want more relevant comparisons lets look at the OJ Simpson riots (may as well call them what they were) and how we overturned an official judgement to appease the active few.
I hope all ends well in France as I still have a great admiration for their integrity and willingness to do whats right. Much like another great leader, on the rise, in South America.

These are very sad times to be an American but where is the rage among the citizenry? Where are the flag wavers who so laud the freedoms symbolized by a flag and written by quill pens in our constitution? Why are we not rallying in the streets against this sort of attrocity? Why because we are gluttonous lazy bastards who say it won't happen to me so who cares. --Ishtar Pasteur

From: Richie Waves France protects its culture.. wat the hell is wrong with that???? That is exactly the angle that some white supremacists take. I agree that this sucks for France, but give me a break. Some of their laws do suck fantastically for their immigrants and minorities. I'm no great scholar of French law though, only going on what I have read.
