Is it just as hard to find a strand of hay in a needle stack as it is to find a needle in a hay stack?

It's more painful. But bits of hay are bigger than needles on average so what you're looking for is larger.

I would say it's about even. As Ordinal points out, the needle is smaller than the hay so it would so it would do a better job of hiding in the stack than the hay would, but since the needles are sharp and pointy, you'd have to search through a stack of needles much more slowly than you would through a stack of hay. In the end, I'd be willing to bet that both searches would take equal time. Anyone care to try?
