SL uses 99% CPU on nothing

I've been running SL on my laptop for almost two years with no problems, but ever since the last update it detects hardware and then nothing happens.

I'm using the latest drivers for everything on an XP SP2. After detecting hardware SL takes up 99% CPU and about 30 MB mem but nothing happens. no error, no login screen no nothing. Any ideas, tips or hints?

Since SL and ATI don't always get along i should mention that it's a 9700 w. 128mb. It used to work just fine so maybe the problem lies somewhere else. I just don't know.

thats pretty much a situation im having only put into different words..and i use the same 9700 but 512mb.
