My friend can open Second Life fine, but when she's there her clothes and skin keep flashing different textures hundred of times, never settling still.

What's the problem and how can we fix it?

Your friend should contact the makers of the skin and clothing that are causing the problem for replacements and see if that helps any. Sometimes textures associated with clothing and skins will become corrupt and cause problems (the skin being the most likely culprit). If that doesn't fix it, it may be a problem with graphics memory or video card overheating. These are my uninformed guesses. Someone else might have better suggestions :)

She's just started Second Life, so these are the most basic skins and clothing...

I notice flashing on avs when they are around moving (rotating) objects blocking the sun. Because avatars can be covered by shadows, if something is between an av and a light source, it will cause the av to flicker. Also, if a light source is itself flickering, this will cause avatars and prims to flicker, but avs don't reflect light from "light" material objects very well, unfortunately.

Sounds like the video card

Some pcs with the intel on board type video cards will do that.
I have a pc at work that will do that when I go into appearance mode, start picking up the textures from my inventory and the things around me. But for me, it will settle down in a few minutes...
Would be a good idea for you are her to post her pc specs here, so the really technical users can help you.
