1.6.10 is the worst yet

Of course, everyone thinks "the latest version" is the worst yet... But since 1.6.10 I've had more arbitrary (as far as I can tell) crashes and horrible lag than any other version since I started playing SL. I'm mostly using the Mac version, but when it gets really awful I have to switch to the work laptop and windows, which seems slightly more stable but still has the same problems.

In the last week or so I've had at least a dozen crashes or having the game simply freeze, requiring me to log in remotely and kill it. (Four crashes just yesterday.) Most of the crashes aren't related to any specific activity, I'll just be standing there chatting and BOOM! I've had SL crash on me outright a few times in the past, but more times with 1.6.10 than every other version combined. Unfortunately there's nothing I'm doing that makes it crash, I have been chatting, flying, standing there, looking in my inventory, etc. It seems completely arbitrary.

The bigger issue I've seen with 1.6.10 is a lot more lag. Pretty much as soon as the 1.6.10 upgrade happened, I noticed the network meters in the upper right hitting "red" a lot more frequently than in the past, especially the outbound. I haven't made any network changes at home, or anything that I can relate to any kind of network load, other than updating to 1.6.10. For several days after the 1.6.10 update the lag was so bad that half my chat messages would get "lost" somewhere on the network and only come back to me after 20-30 seconds, usually badly out of order, which made it hard to chat with other players as it's hard to tell what I'm saying when my response comes before the question... This seems to have mostly cleared up, but I still get "lag spikes" where for several minutes at a time SL doesn't respond to keypresses or chat messages or anything, and my outbound network meter is pegged as high as it can go, stays that way for 15-30 seconds, then clears up for a minute or two and starts all over.

I've reported all the crashes with crashreporter, hopefully that may help someone somewhere, but I don't have any ideas on what's causing the lag except some change to the client. And like I said, this is primarily with the Mac version. I've done All The Usual Things that get recommended when people are having SL crash issues, so we can safely skip the "level one tech support script"...

Has anyone else been seeing these problems with 1.6.10? Or is this like every version where only a handful of people seem to have major issues and everyone else says, "Nope, it's fine here, must be you." :D

Well I started SecondLife with this version, and it's a giant mess of laggyness and crashing
but there are times when it is actually good (at 3am with 700 people online) which are quite enjoyable.

HAHAHAHA!!! Yup, it doesn't run half bad then. :) I've also noticed the lag, esp. when I TP to other sims. Many times I can't get the area to rez, and can't land my AV, because he falls into the ground. I hear the disk just going nuts with the cache. My only recourse is to relog, which then allows me to land, but only somewhat reduces the lag.

I've only crashed twice on this version, and that was due to my odd and weird video drivers screwing everything up.

After I updates my video drivers to the official ones I've had no problems.

I'm just curious, if you only crashed twice before, then how do you know the video driver updates did anything? Two cases is not much of a test sample.

Install game, start, crash, Windows XP goes to black, soft reset:

Start game, crash, Windows XP goes to black, soft reset:

Update ATI drivers and remove hacked drivers, Start game, no crashes since then.

I see, so you basically were not able to run it at all or reliably before without crashing, correct?

The problem is that many people on here were able to run just fine, then suddenly it starts acting flaky on them after an update. So, the two situations are not quite the same.

I see.

Yeah, I just started SL on this version, so I have really nothing to compare it to as of yet.

I've been experiencing crashes after teleports, like, when the area and my AV are rezzing up (My AV has about 18 attachments). This has been happening on my recent setup: Windows XP AMD XP 3000+, ATI 9800 PRO, and 1 GB of dual channel memory. Please don't say it is a firewall issue either cause I have my firewall configured for SL.

I've encountered time dialations in sandboxes and once in the Welcome Area.

As for lag I have noticed it as I am sure most everyone else has. I do get the chat lag as well. Sometimes I have to press enter twice to get my "..." to go away.

Oh, you don't want to hear the same crap you hear everytime someone posts that they keep crashing after an update? You don't want to hear it's your video drivers, your bios, your firewall, your anti-virus software, your cache, your video card overheating, bad memory, powerloss in your home, that it's a government conspiricy, that you were born under a bad sign, etc.? Well, don't even think it's SL!! They write perfect code, so the problem most certainly is the hampster not running fast enough to keep the fan going at proper RPM levels!! What are you feeding the little guy? How much per day? What percentage of fat and ash? :)
