Ok well it's not just me, a lot of people I talk to are having the same problem. Sometimes when connecting to SL it can take 5minutes to 3 hours to connect to Second Life and each failed attempt disconnects your internet.. It's pissing me off and it's messing up time-schedules and event hosting when one of us can't log on. It started when SL last updated. >: |
Also, in this matter nothing is showing up in the logs so I figured it would be useless to post them...

No problem here

I've not experienced this issue. The only things I can think of that might make a difference is, do you have the connection speed speed set properly, about 10% below you internet connection speed, and have you tried clearing your cache? Have you used any programs that claim to optomise your internet connection?

I've tried setting the connection on tons of settings, I tried clearing my cache, and no I do not use any programs like that and even have been closing out everything else except for SL to see if something was interfering. But it's not just me so the problem must be with SL, a lot of people are having this problem and I talked to a few Lindens about it. (Back when I could actually log on..)
Right now I'm supposed to be hosting an event wo0t. I have all the equipment for it in my inventory yet no one can get to it <3

I've noticed that sometimes internets disconnects when you go over your max connections, maybe that is the problem, if so how would I solve it? But that wouldn't seem as likely since it only started after the update last week..

Here`s your post. This isn`t the same problem i`m having but somethnig isn`t right that`s for sure. If I cannot connect to SL my net doesn`t go off, it goes off constantly while playing SL though.

I see the same thing, packet loss started immediately on the 1.9 patch, but it's also locking my router on occasion.
We had the same problem in EverQuest right after one of the expansions, a certain sequance of bytes or something caused the lockup. Once they finally acknowledged that the problem existed (which took 2 months) it only took them a few days to figure out what it was
And NO, I dont have a wireless router. Mine is a very standard CAT5 wired eithernet router
I suspect those of us who are paid, live entertainers in SL are effected the worst by this problem of lockups and disconnects, since our customers expect us to be there.

I wanna know more--who else is having this, and specifics please: what kind of error messages do you get from SL when this happens?
I had a previous problem in SL in which I got disconnected from SL when opening the Map. Turns out the Map was throwing some big packets at my router. I disconnected it and the bug was soon fixed, but cleanest signal path applies.
Simplify it: if you can, create a new Windows username and install SL on it. Look for any "triggers".

The packet loss I'm seeing when online started immediately after the 1.9 patch, and is constant. At least constantly there. It varies in intensity from about 2% up to about 15%, mostly hovering at about 4-5% packet loss.
The Disconnects and router locks can happen at any time. The network meter can be all the way up at the top (I think im set for about 600kb/sec) or all the way down. Most often I get disconnected just standing there so I dont think its related to a specific window or function throwing a lot of data.... I could be in a room with 20+ people, or all alone on my Ranch (with no one else even in my Sim)
The one observation I do have that might help is that this reminds me of what was happening to my roommate and I before we knew about the -port command. I did notice that the patch wiped out the -port command line option in the SL shortcut, but putting it back in didnt help, nor did changing from port 13008 to 13001 ... Yes, I have the router set for port forwarding of those ports to my computer (instead of Quentin's) and he hasnt been playing SL at all... he already gave up.
The message I see most often is "You have been logged out of second life" bla bla bla, but on occasion I see the "Garbled" disconnect message. (Not all that often)
I suspect that the packets are getting to my router, but if the port option is being ignored on one end or the other of SL .... They might be getting lost on my ethernet locally
I posted in another thread that a possiblity is that some programmer at LL decided to "optomize" the communications routines and accedently knocked out the port command, either in the client or the server.... another thought that had occured to me is that the com thread might simply not have enough buffer... perhaps someone thought the SL client didnt need as much buffer space for communication packets as it had in 1.8 and decided to turn it down a knotch.... or 50 .... or possibly that the coms thread simply isnt getting enough priority to actually do its job.
Whatever it is, it's something new to 1.9
What is REALLY annoying is that new "We just logged you out" or "you are logging in already" message when you try to get back in after being disconnected (or crashing) It might not be so bad when you only crash or disconnect one or two times a day but when the disconnects are between 5 and 10 times per hour....

How can you actually be getting disconnected from the internet like this? I can't see how SL can do that. Do you have to power cycle your cable modem and/or router to get back online, or do you simply mean getting dumped offline Second Life? If you can still web surf when your get dumped offline, your internet connection is fine.
However I have had some cases, usually when downloading with Bit Torrent all day, where even after closing my BT client, and even rebooting, my internet connection is still slow and barely responsive. Even after power cycling my modem and router, it wouldn't fix it.
However getting my IP address changed DID clear everything up. All I had to do was change the MAC address on my router to something slightly different (or cloned it from one of my PCs) and power cycled my modem and router, and I was given a different IP address.

Power Cycling the Router is required. I think my Degree in Computer Science/Engineering from CSU Berkeley lets me tell the the difference between a single program crash and a 100% packet loss on a router. Please dont assume everyone is an idiot.

While I think answering an honest question by waving one's Berkeley degree around as proof one is not an idiot is a bit asiten*, and usually only makes one only look like more of an idiot (or just really lacking in self-confidence)... I'm experiencing the same thing as Jitar Bunin, except resetting the router doesn't do anything. I'm just stuck unable to get online at all until a few minutes (or in some cases a few hours) later, when everything seems to just fix itself. I didn't link it to SL at first, but I began to suspect more and more, and after reading these posts I'm pretty well convinced. I'm certainly glad I haven't gotten a premium account yet *Yes, asiten. Beyond asinine, y'see. I wish I could claim it as my own word, but alas :/

For the last two years i have had internet connection problems much like you are describing, that have gradualy gotten worse. I too access the internet though a cable modem. For the last year i have suspected it was either A) my ISP (they are the devil incarnate), B) my cable modem (which i came to relize was also... the devil incarnate; considering it's a known fact that TV is the devil this didn't come as a shock). Back in the 90's we purchased our cable modem (getting a rebate that payed for it). So I did a little shopping around and purchased a brand new cable modem from WallMart (online of course, 67$ including shipping and taxes). This was two weeks ago, I have not had packet loss since, my connection has been stable. Replacing my cable modem was the best thing I ever did.BTW my old cable modem was an RCA, from what I've read (in the process of buying a new one) they are POS. My new one is a Motarola Surfboard.

Actually I just thought the person I was replying to needed a bat on the nose. **meows** Despite the fact that most people here wouldnt know what network byte order is, or what the dibit of a 270 degree phazeshift is... (or care, or need to know) ... that dosent mean everyone here cant tell the difference between a floppy and a piece of toast. His assumption that I couldn't know what I was talking about was insulting.

Simplify it: if you can, create a new Windows username and install SL on it. Look for any "triggers". 1) The trigger is logging on Second Life . My internet "dies" after trying to log on. I am not able to do anything once I attempt to log on (Yes this sounds newbieish written but everything else was basically covered by Jitar <3 2) Well I've tried clearing caches, closing inventory and mini-map options, etc. I've played around with a lot of SecondLife settings trying to get it to work. 3) Hmm Spicey Honey said she fixed the problem by reinstalling Second Life, but that didn't work for me. Sinner Shang randomly disconnects from Second Life. Erica Tweak sometimes has the problem when trying to log on, but not as often as me.. It's only once in a while am I to successfully log on, and once I log on I am all set unless I try to retexture hair or recolor mass amounts of objects then my internet dies all over again.

It's possible your ISP is doing bandwidth shaping on SL traffic.
