Removing cam constraints has destroyed what little vestige of privacy there was in SL. Someone can now put a cam in a bedroom from 512M away, which is way further than the 96M range of sensors. SL must restore the former cam constraints in order to make some semblance of privacy possible.
Plz make cam range much shorter than sensor range, and plz don't force me have to have to buy an island in order to get some privacy.
Thanks, mush Caldera

I think they did this because cam range is (of necessity) implemented in the client (the SL application) and not the sim, and so it could already be bypassed by using programs that either modified the client or accessed OpenGL directly. Client-side security only provides an illusion of security, and it's better that we all know what the real limitations are instead of only letting creeps and griefers go beyond the artificial restrictions in the client.

This is why I think LL should replace or extend the current "access control" mechanism with one that simply doesn't allow someone's scripts or client to access anything on parcels they don't have access to, and the clients of people on that parcel wouldn't be able to access your objects. If you're banned from an area, it would simply look like unimproved land to you. If you enter it (if that's allowed), all you'll be able to see is your own avatar and maybe an outline of any objects you collide with. People on that parcel wouldn't see you (no matter where you are) nor any objects belonging to you... though their scripts could continue to monitor you.
That way you could set your parcel "group only", and nobody not in the group could even see into it. You wouldn't need "skyboxes" or "private sims" for privacy.
