I'm seeing a *lot* of ghosted avatars lately, sometimes six or seven are in view at the same time. Usually they are frozen in the air in flying animations, but I have seen them in walking animations and just standing around.
Hadn't seen ghosting since before 1.6. Am I the only one seeing them?

They never really fixed ghosting, just made it harder to happen.

What Strife said, and several factors can be the cause. The usual factor is bandwidth problems.
When I run SL on my desktop, it generally has no problems with ghosts. However, when I run my laptop over my Wireless-G connection, I get frequent ghosted objects.
My guess is you're just going to a laggy area.

There are multiple kinds of ghosting. The ghosting that was fixed was for objects. This was a bug that had been around for a very long time and since it has been fixed I have not seen or heard of *objects* ghosting. If you know different and especially if you know of a reproducable way to make *objects* ghost please let QA know by filing a bug report.
There is at least 1 known bug for avatars ghosting which is very different than the objects ghosting bug because we treat avatars very differently than we do objects.

I've noticed that in extremely high bandwidth situations (for sim and client), occasionally I do have objects ghost on me. This happens quite often on my laptop, likely due to lost UDP packets. It's also very reproducable with the game I'm building for the contest, so sooner or later I'll probably have a chance to show you.

Sadly, I have to report that ghosting of objects appears to be in fact, back. Due to the way that I choose to enjoy my Second Life, ghosting is something I've been very in tune with for a long time. When 1.6 came out, I noticed a dramatic improvement in AV ghosts, and object ghosts appeared to be nonexistent. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case from an object perspective, and I noticed an abrupt change only recently. Consider the following photos, both taken this evening: One, after a large Yacht passed thru the dancefloor at the Shelter . The picture is taken outside, hours after the incident. Some folks can see the yacht, others don't. The object carries the familiar "No Name" when you hover your mouse over it - and is most genuinely a ghost. Two - taken from a holovendor that frequently rezzes & derezzes objects on a cycle. Note the hovertext above the photo. EDIT: Of course, I filed a bug report.

I didn't even think about it but I did see an avie ghost today, in Chaos, which was admittedly LAG-A-RIF-FIC at the time.
Poor avie was doing the float/swim in place boogie.
Tragic.

Well i would have sympothy for this situation if I hadn't been told by a Linden in preview a couple months back not to give out my sky walking rezzer (I was told to stop). I was giving them out to test ghosting, they are notorious for creating ghosts. They seemed to think it caused client side lag (which I have never noticed from it before). All explination was lost on this Linden.
Even at that time it was creating ghosts.
I don't think I filled a bug report. Wasn't important to the Linden.

*bump Ever try to carry a conversation with someone who is ghosted? Hang around the Iris telehub for half an hour (currently high fps telehub sim): you're bound to see tons of ghosted avs. I just counted 21 ghosted avs after 45 mins. of being logged on. And it happens everytime for me. It seems like ghosted avs that occur while you are in the sim don't go away until you relog. You can TP to another sim, come back later and the ghosts are still there. The bug is blatant enough (even if it is client-side) that symptom for trouble-shooting and ultimately solving the bug(s) are obviously apparent. But I'm assuming LL is more aware of the situation than the end user... though never so sure. =\

The automated jet liner that takes off from Abbots and flies around the world sometimes leaves ghosts that can be seen from the forest in Rodeo.

Hmm. This explains what happen to me in the Morris sandbox the other day. I was experimenting with gadget that I'm finishing, turned it off, and began a discussion. Several minutes later, I realised that the last couple dozen temporary phantom prims are still sticking around, through people and such. Checked them to make sure that they WERE temporary and that I hadn't messed up. Observed that they were 'no-name' instead of the objname that I'd expected to see.
Slightly embarassed by the clutter, I attempted to delete the objects, with no success. I edited a few, moving them up out of the way. Then in response to enquiries, I realised that while people could see what I was DOING, they couldn't see what I was doing it TO. Aha, I thought, suddenly acquiring clue despite my noobishness. This is the object ghosting people refer to.
I ended up trying a couple things. I left the sim and came back. I TP'ed home and back to the sim. Neither of these helped. Then I repeated the double-TP and they were gone.
Neither lag nor packet loss featured particularly in my experience of that period. Everything was running pretty smoothly, time-dilation was nominal. However, Eirinn was crafting some physics-heavy gadgets quite near.
That's all the data I can offer on the incident. Can't think of a blessed other thing that might be useful.

One more data point with little data: I had a single-prim object ghost a couple days ago in a backwater sim with no other unusual cirumstances noted. It was sufficient to make me think "oh, the ghosts are back". Que sera.

Object ghosting never went away. I have filed bug reports about object ghosting since it was incorrectly considered to have been fixed. I haven't filed a whole lot because I got just got tired of always trying to use a building system that works badly, so I don't build anything anymore, because it's not any fun using a broken program.

Ghosting is still here
08-30-2005 10:03
Just the other day I was flying through one sim to another in my drop ship, when I was kicked out of the aircraft and proceded to fall to the very hart of the linden world in complete darkness. I was eventualy rezed again followed by a system crash of which I had to reboot.
A day went past when I had an IM from another SL resident asking if I was missing a Drop ship. He kindly teleported me to the location and there it was........ Engines screeming and lodged half way in someones house. I put the jump ship back in to my invetory and the situation was solved. The aircraft was set to delete itself once I had left it.
I would like to appologise to any resident who had to put up with this terrible racket while I was totaly unaware of this Ghost ship.

Yay Ghosts
08-30-2005 10:16
I see one or two ghosted Avs a week. Personally I think they are great. Especially when user is online somewhere else in world and there ghosted av is blinking in front of me - occasionally bald and quite creepy. I take pictures of them and have a lil ghost bustin collection. Its cool ot TP the user to the ghosted av as it makes there "live" av merge with their "spirit" av. Its also great because Im often the only one who sees the ghost so I can have people pose with the ghosts and send them images which really freaks them out. I say YAY for ghosts

That is royally cool. You need to set up a photo exhibit.

My neighbor and I have ghost avatars drop in on us all the time! We've taken several pictures of them so far, and I must agree...some of them are on the scary side...

I've had trouble when I was in a pretty empty sim. Whenever I dragged multi-linked objects, it would leave copies or ghosts of some prims behind. I tried deleting them but found they were ghosts. I didn't relog, but I was having other issues, like prim-shifting and moving the sun around for better lighting.
I also was deleting some trees and bushes on my plot and several of these ghosted after I hit delete. They blinked once but remained. I had to relog. I didn't report them, I completely forgot that I should. And if I do encounter a ghosting issue, under which category do I report it to?

I found that ghosts happen most often when temp-on-rez-items are used. I have created a scanner display, which quite regularly produces ghosts. You can see it in my castle in Degar, on the right side of the door as you enter. A bug report regarding that has been filed, and Kona Linden has all the sources and objects.

I just reported an object ghost in 1.7 Preview a few minutes ago. Also reported several in 1.6 Preview after they were supposedly prevented, as well as a couple of them on the 1.6 main grid. It's never been gone, just less common.
