As a long-time PostgreSQL DBA who also uses MySQL, I'd like to recommend the upcoming PostgreSQL 8.0 to Linden Lab as a replacement for MySQL in a future rewrite, if they plan one (not that you'll have to change the queries very much). Among many existing features, including high scalability, the new PostgreSQL version will have database savepoints with point-in-time recovery, and configurable tablespaces, so you can lay the data out on several disks, add new ones in, etc. The new features seem particularly beneficial to the needs of SL. Anyway, just a suggestion in case you're not up on PostgreSQL. A nice news article about the new release is:
