Improper sort or sort bug in "find"

Okay, I didn't get an answer in general so I am re-posting here...

My group name ("BLACK";), doesn't show up in the list when you search for the word "black."

All the right options are ticked etc., but it just doesn't show up. It's been suggested that because the list cuts off at 100 entries that I am not showing up because there are too many entries, but this makes no sense at all using standard sort techniques. It should be very close to the top of the list (after the entry that begins with the "cheat" characters.) It should certainly show up ahead of all the entries that are "Black <word beginning with "A">" (it currently doesn't).

I have made a ton of databases in RL and AFAIK a standard alphanumeric sort should be:

!RED
RED
red
red cat
red dog
etc ...

or sometimes:

red
RED
!red
red cat
red dog

Whereas if (Torley) is right about it being "further down the list," the find sort must be more like:

!Red cat
red cat
red dog
red zebra
!red
red
RED

or maybe:

!Red cat
!red
red cat
red dog
red zebra
red
RED

To me this is a "bug" in the sense that it is not a standard alphanumeric sort. I think when people are choosing group names, store names etc., that we have the right to expect that the sort be a standard one, not some weird made-up thing.

Does anyone know if this has come up before,or what kind of weird code is used here?

I am thinking it's either the most unusual alphanumeric sort in creation, or there is a bug that shuffles "single word" groups to the end of the list. Anyone else have a single-word group that doesn't show up?

Dianne, I don't think it necessariily tries to put out the first one hundred according to any sort of sort, it may just just pick out matching items at random, or by their order of creation, or who knows what, until it reaches one hundred, then sorts the batch of one hundred.

Well that (highly embarassing) fact would be a good reason why I have met with the big wall of silence on my posts.

Thanks for letting me know. :)
Despite my criticisms of it I had no idea that the search was truly *that* dumb.

For a place that actually runs on databases and only really exists as a series of related databases to have that kind of a setup boggles the mind.

I work on databases in RL for a living and if I created a solution for one of my customers that randomly grabbed "some" of the results of a find and then "sort of" ordered them, I think I would lose that contract in a hurry. Jeez.

It would still be nice though for an actual Linden who knows somethign about databases, to do a little research on this topic and post the answers.

- Are all newly created groups that use "common words" not showing up then?
- Are single word groups not showing up?
- What are the criteria for being in the firt 100 returns on a search?

I could think of a few easy tests to make to find out what is happening, but they all require me to spend my own money to do so at 100 lindens a group!

When you put in "the best" as a search term this is what you get:

When you put in just "the" here is what you get, starting at where "the" is the first word in the group name:

Seems to me the items in the first list that start with "the best" should be in the second list, since the second list gets beyond "the best", if it's matching the search term against a somewhat alphabetically ordered list.

The first item in the first list shouldn't be there at all because it doesn't have "the best" in it.

It seems pretty screwed up and senseless to me.

Is it mature?
03-29-2006 03:48
I noticed once to watch that "Include mature content" box. Once after an update it was not checked and I couldn't find what I was looking for. I wondered had everyone gone out of business? Were people getting banned too?

Then I put noticed that including mature content was not selected. I selected it and there everything was again.

So in short, if you have flagged your group or business as mature, be sure that you are also searching under mature content.
