Okay I just got my new lapto (Yes i know sl shouldnt be playd on a laptop) and it has a ATI Radeon Xpress 200 mobile with 128 dedicated ram. So why is it that my other laptop which has an Nvidea GeForce 4 4000 mobile plays Sl better? When Im standing still, I get rougtly 2.0 fps MAX but wen flying I can get 14. So is it my new gfx card? Or something else?

LOL yes, it's the graphics card.

SL tends to be more nvidia friendly anyway, but the ironically named XPress is a horrid chipset. It shares your system memory for video memory (even if it says dedicated, it will take some of it), doesn't properly support hardware T&L, and has all sorts of issues with OpenGL. Make sure your drivers are UTD but dont expect much power out of it.

The GeForce 4 4000 has a better driver set, probably had dedicated memory, is based on teh technology of the trusty ti 4200, and supports OpenGL famously. Hardware T&L is rough but functional.

too bad its a laptop.

nVidia is King of OpenGL

... Never forget that. :)

They did, after all, buy out 3dfx, who pretty-much owned in the GL of the days - and when nVidia brought the TNT2 to light, there was so much more to be had with it than any other card at the time.

I feel your pain, Dust :) The Xpress 200 (while better than the last card I had, an ATI Rage ^.^) doesn't get along very well with Second Life. I don't know how much memory (RAM) your computer has, but I've heard that increasing it can help games run faster. In the meantime, make sure you have 'avatar vertex program' set to off, detail and performance options set to off, and drop draw distance enabled to whatever number you'd like. Hopefully that will help.
