Consider installing Windows 2000 workstation- I find it faster and far less annoying than XP, and second life even seems to run better on it.

If you want to go with Linux I would recomend Ubuntu Linux . Ubuntu is designed to be a no brainer installation and matanence Linux (and it is) The installer ran perfectlly, it auto updates, and comes with everythign you need. Only hangups are installing good 3D video drivers for nVidia or ATI means jumping through a few hoops, but they are low hoops. Gettign SL to run on the AMD64 version adds another hoop, but if you stick with 32 bit varsions this and many other software version problems can be avoided.
