So yesterday I went to teleport to a friend (I was mapping them instead of them sending me the TP request) and I landed a little off...so off it was in someone's residence while they were..occupied in the carnal way.
After some testing I discovered that if I put coordinates in the map or gave someone a slurl the landing was off. (Still in the sim but not the exact coordinates) A person requesting me to teleport to them ended up with me in the correct coordinates. Also landmarks were correct lands.
I was too tired and too much on nyquil to troubleshoot my end but I had a friend help test it and he experienced the same thing so either we both had laggy/packetlossy connections (entirely possible) or this just was happening yesterday. My question - anyone else notice this?
I'm just curious for curiosity's sake.

Map updates are inheriently slow (not real time), and the scales cannot be trusted. I mean is anyone really that big and round in relationship to the size of a sim? That would put me at about a 20mtr diameter belly...

This has to do with the behavior of direct teleporting. The parcel you were trying to teleport to didn't allow direct teleporting, so the sim automatically searched for the nearest parcel that allowed you to teleport in. Unfortunately, that was occupied by those people doing their carnal thing. They oughta've turned off direct teleporting, too.
Teleport offers circumvent direct teleporting limits.

Well, I'm sure it involves in some instances direct teleporting. For example normally I use my teleporting device to get to my store- bam it's 100 percent on the ball. However, just last night it was not. I did delete and resave my 'landmark', which honestly all the teleporting device does is basically keep a 'notecard' of slurls and make them a menu for me to select from. I've also used this device with a sim that doesn't allow direct TP, that it forces the TP point to be a specific point in the sim, and this device respected that (essentially it would, 100 percent of the time, tp me to the forced point). As I said, it could be my end, it could be LL's end, I was just curious if anyone else noticed this behavior or if it was the cough medicine I was taking.
