Hello everyone!

I have been in SL for just over 2 weeks now, and I'm now having really bad crashing issues, I have sent literally hundreds of crash reports over the last couple of nights.

I have consulted Live Help, was told to uninstall everything and so I did, reinstalled the latest client (which I'd just uninstalled) and now the same is happening again.

I've just made myself a paying resident to access this forum to try and get help, so I really hope it was all worth it *fingers crossed*

I have configured my Norton Firewall as much as I can (without ever having to configure it before!) I am using Norton Internet Security suite. I have checked the Firewall setting up page in the Knowledge base - but that doesn't say which ports to Permit/Block, only Hardware Ports for routers (which I don't have).

My system should also be able to cope with SL:

AMD Athlon XP 2800+ MMX, 3DNow 2.1Ghz

768ram

DirectX 9.0c 4.09.0000.0904

Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)

MSI Motherboard MS-7021

NVIDIA GeForce FX5950 Ultra 256.0Mb
Driver: nv4_disp.dll
Version: 6.14.0010.9371

I have toned down all my graphical settings & this hasn't even allowed me in. I am currently on a (debatable) 2mb broadband connection with tiscali (yes I know...)

I literally can't get into SL when it comes to evening and it feels like I'm being blocked.

If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks

Thank you for that, but it wasn't down when I was getting my recurring crashes earlier today.

Could you be more specific? As in, was there specific actions that caused you to crash? (Opening up prefs, clicking on objects, etc.)

Also, make sure you have the latest NVIDIA drivers. I know you posted your version, but I don't know if that is the latest or not.

I was standing in a pretty busy shop last time! crash. It always happens at a certain time of day from 4pm GMT onwards until about 12:30am! Unplayable! Crash after Crash after Crash rinse & repeat about 100 times. I cannot even use the new First Look, well I'm ok if I just stand, not move or anything, can't access anything just watch the screen & I'm fine - if I try to move 1 step - BANG the whole thing crashes for me. Main Second Life just crashes me just after 4pm every day (as I said above) and I just can't get passed 'Connecting to region...' after that my Task Manager says the dreaded 'Not Responding' message.

I find this really odd, as I have played SL for about 3 weeks - the 1st 2 week were pretty fine, but now......well I may as well just quit! cos I'm not able to use SL after this time of day.

My Nvidia drivers are up to date, I also have defragged my system, ran anti-virus, made all the settings in preferences ridiculously modest for my system (See above), and as far as I know have configured my firewall to run SL, but I have never configured a firewall before, and the notes about configuring it on the SL site are really very vague - it points to no actual port numbers for the 'dream' configuration in Norton it only goes into detail with numbering if you have a hardware firewall!

I really hope somebody has the experience to help as I my confidence is beginning to wane.

Thanks in advance :)

I am intrigued by the fact that it happens at a certain time... It seems software related. Close all your programs in the background including Norton. Perhaps Norton is scheduled to do something between that time? also, check your Scheduled Events in Windows. see if you have anything scheduled during that time.

Run Second Life in a Window instead of full screen.. make it small.. and see if it still crashes.

Thanks Justin!

I've checked my scheduled tasks, and there was only 1 scheduled to start up on a certain day & not in this time period.

I have also turned off Norton Security Suite a number of times, this has absolutely no effect at all - apart from letting hackers get into my system! Second Life still hangs at 'Connecting to region...' followed by 'Not responding'.

Regarding the programmes running in the background, please can you enlighten me on the ones to close & the ones to keep open? I know this can have an adverse effect if you turn off the wrong ones.

I'm so fed up with this, I have a system that can run Half Life 2/Doom 3 & a couple of intensive graphics programmes all at the same time & I can't run SL - very strange.

The most annoying thing is there are no concrete solutions here, it's a matter of elimination to me & I've done all the eliminating I can do:

- Uninistalled SL & downloaded latest client

- Configured Firewalls - also tested them on & off

- Turned Norton Security off

- Ran DXdiag to see if I had a problem

- Downloaded latest Nvidia drivers

- Turned off some of the programmes that are open at Startup

- Defragged

- Downloaded DiskKeeper Lite & Optimizer XP (which is about 5 years out of date) ran them both. Now removed as spyware

- Lowered all my settings in Second Life to ridiculously modest ones that my pc should breeze!

- Tried running it in a smaller window (always have run it in a window anyhow)

I want to also point out that the previous First Look viewer I was able to run very well, and always resorted to using it, after main SL stopped working for me.

Latest First Look cannot be used, just crashes, you move & it crashes out!

I really don't think the problem lies with me!!!!!!!
