Greetings! I am a newbie to SecondLife. I have been enjoying it very much until the update. I am waiting patiently to have it back to normal.

While I was OUT of world I explored the SL main page. I decided to check out the Cnet interview with the SL CEO. As I watched the video, I was AMAZED at how he managed the avatar. It was turning, flying, walking with amazing speed! The graphics were clear and rezzed completely. I thought to myself, is this what Second Life should be like? My avatar doesnt fly, walk that fast. Actually Im a bumbling idiot inworld with the arrow keys. Was HIS avatar tweaked in some way to make it act better for the interview???

Also...BEFORE the update..did SL actually work that way for others? Do I have a crappy video card, which is keeping me from enjoying the FULL benefit of SL?

When I first joined..I did not have a decent video card. A person who befriended me told me I should update my video card. Which I did. I now have a Nvidia GE Force4 MX 4000. I am running XP.

So Im asking all the geeks (which is said affectionately) for some imput to help achieve a better SL experience!
Thanks!

well me and my roomie run about the same computer except she as a gf 4mx 4400 and i dont
she gets horrible choppyness where ever she goes and just generally poor performance

A if you are able to understand the tech sheets a gf4 mx is a stripped down gf2TI
B most dont have DDR memory, which help account for the dirt low framerates
C most have 64 mb of memory, after 1.7 this becomes more questionable

my other roomie has a gf fx 5200 or something cost 40 bucks(last year) has pixelshaders for new games, runs at a reasonable pace (even in sl) and 128mb of ram, so a new card probally isnt out of the question. Just depends on how much money you wanna spend and how fast for how long do you want it ...

Textures well they are just screwed atm.

performance ... turn off lighting shadows make everything low detail and bring your draw distance down to 64m, depending on how fog affects your system (like it kills mine for some reason) shove it away to 4m, atleast with my card i cant see crap beyond, and the volumetric fog drops my framerate down to nothing, for nothing (i cant see it so why do i need to hide it behind fog so my computer wont render whats not being rendered anyways)

Keep in mind, Phillip and SL have access to high end computers that will run SL smooth as glass. Of course that video was shot over a year ago I think so what was high end then isn't so much now.

Your video card is right at the bottom of the food chain, so to speak. What you are talking about though, smooth movement , has a lot more to do with CPU speed, memory and internet connection. To get that smooth as glass movement you would need at the least a 1.8gig CPU (non Celron or Sempron), at least 512 megs memory, Nvidia 5500, and a 1meg cable internet connection. Then again, if you look at the video closely you will see a couple of points where SL pauses as he moves, this happens no matter what system you have.

If you are looking to upgrade, the least I would settle for would be a 2.5 CPU, 1 meg memory, and an Nvidia 6600. Good performance and it will be a good computer for a few years yet.

A better option with a long path for upgrading would be to get a 939 based motherboard like A8N-SLI and the 3200+ AMD 64 chip. The 3200+ is relatively inexpensive but with this motherboard you can upgrade to the fastest FX-57 CPU or even the 4800+ X2 Duel core processors in a couple of years if you like. With the SLI PCIe slots you can get a 6600GT video card now and add a second identincal card later when the prices come down and have a really rocking system.

Thanks for the info! I will look into more Memory and a new card :)
