Ok. Here's what i have:

OS: XP Pro (Version 2002; Service Pack 2)
AMD Athlon (1.04 GHz; 1.00 GB of RAM)
Graphics Card: ATI VisionTek Radeon X1300 (512MB)

Just to preface, Im not too familiar with the hardware end of computer stuff, so keep that in mind when replying!

My boyfriend & I just got this ATI Radeon card. We used to use an Nvidia GeForce FX5600. Ever since he installed the ATI card, we have been having issues. Namely our computer screen flickers and acts weird when booting up and loading profiles. As far as SL goes, I have always had crashing problems, but they have gotten much worse. Taking down the entire OS, getting the "blue screen of death", having the screen go blank and say "Out of Range" in a big box.. Desktop display settings, and monitor screen alignment setting itself to weird settings out of nowhere.. All of this happening after SL crashes.

Everything we have read about these issues all offers the same advice "Make sure your drivers are up to date". Well, we can say with 100% certainty that we have the most up to date drivers you can get installed. So, upon reading some help sites for ATI, my bf figured out that some of the Nvidia drivers that we had installed for the previous graphics card were still on our machine. He was told to download a program (I think its like Driver Cleaner or something?) and use it to uninstall all the old Nvidia drivers. He did this yesterday, and said that it appeared to reduce the amount of flickering we were getting. (although he also said that some of the old drivers refuse to uninstall) But, now, when I try to load SL, I get the GDI generic error and it says that I need to update my drivers. It wont let me log on. My bf is totally out of ideas on what to do. He insists that SL is a peice of crap and that its not our computer's fault. but Im not buying it. I know plenty of people who run SL with no problems... The old graphics card worked ok, but I still crashed alot.

I tried unintalling SL, restarting the computer, and reinstalling, but that didnt help at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I really would like to have SL working properly for once in my lifetime! Thanks.

Bad air circulation in the case could be the cause of your crashing. As to the GDI error, you will need to reinstall your current graphics card drivers (if you still get GDI errors, more drastic messures may need to be taken).

Hmm, well.. my bf built the computer, and he seems to think that the air circulation is just fine...I dont know how to tell :p

as far as reinstalling the graphics card drivers, i belive my bf uninstalled all the ATI drivers, uninstalled the old Nvidia drivers and then reinstalled the ATI drivers. so, im not sure that another re-install would really change anything...

thanks for the suggestions, though
