Ug Having a serious Issue Running SL and thought I would post it here And See if i could get some advise. My laptop runs Sl (runs being a relative term) But it is only getting 1-3 fps ...seems like stop motion photography most of the time. MY laptop seems to have every thing it needs to run decent yet no matter wht i try it does not improve even chat is delayed because it runs so slow. Here are the epecs on it Its an Hp Pavilion Dv8110us 17 inch wide screen. Specs are processor :Amd Turion 64 bit @1.8 ghz Ram 1280 MB video card ATi Radeon Xpress 200M (has 128 meg Memeory on vid card)
Ive updated drivers for everything set Sl to tun at 600x800 mode with graphics turned way down still no improvement. Any Help I would really appreciate it =) =^.^= Tori

The specs for the ATi Radeon 200M include this phrase o'doom: Up to 128MB Set by User (Video RAM is shared with regular RAM) This means that, basically, the 200M functions much like a traditional "onboard video" circuit that you might find in a lesser machine. It "steals" memory from the main system RAM to use for video functions as needed. This generally is not good for graphically intensive programs like SL. So if you have 1280 MB, and it uses the full amount of video RAM possible (128 MB), then that leaves only 1152 MB free. However, that is still more than 1 GB of RAM, which ought to be enough, which makes me wonder if something else is up. With SL running, look under Help | About Second Life and it will tell you some things about how SL is reading your PC's hardware. If you'll post that information here, it might help some of us to give you further information. P2 edit: According to HP's website, that machine comes standard with only 512 MB of RAM. Have you had some added? If not, and it does only have 512 MB, if the video is using 128 MB, that's going to leave only 384 MB, which is barely adequate to run SL.

The X200 video chipset is also very very very basic. Unfortunately, other than getting the latest drivers and turning your graphics settings down, you're really stuck with it. You can't upgrade laptops like desktops.

The video card is definitely the problem. Turn all your settings to the minimum and set draw distance to 64 meters (or lower) meters; also, you can try going to Control Play, Display, Advanced. Somewhere in the ATI setting you should be able to pick how much memory to use; my guess is it defaults to 32 megs, change it to 128 megs, and restart your computer.
We hope to see you in world and I hope it works out - at least a little bit!
Regards,
-Flip

From: FlipperPA Peregrine Torley's ability to type at full speed You ever play in a trivia game with Torley competing? It's a good chance to rest the typing fingers, prop up the feet and set a spell.

Try turning avatar vertex program off in SL preferences if you haven't already, Tori. I have the same graphics card and a similar machine and it gave me an additional 10-15 fps. Fancy effects like ripple water and local lighting may run it slow, but hey, it's a built-in card after all. By the way, I've seen no change in performance through different resolutions. Anywhere from 1200 x 800 to 640 x 480 (and less) gives the same framerate. It's a matter of working with the game and card settings, and hoping Linden Labs gives more support to us users with ATI cards (hint hint)

Now I understand what Torley means. People speak about her as though she is some kinda long dead non-corporeal voice emanating from six feet under that can't ever reply as a person beyond reiterating linden coloured phrases. "Thank you...I wish I had Torley's ability to type at full speed without having my fingers autocomplete words!" should be worded as: "Torley, . . . I wish I had your ability to type at full speed without having my fingers autocomplete words!"

The 200M is basically an Intel video card and it may have 128 meg of memory, but it isn't the fast type used like an 'on the card' memory setup, instead it is basically system memory which is slow. The video card itself is designed for spread sheets, solitare and maybe a video
