I have a similar problem. I can log in but after about 10 mins my computer crashes and I have to reboot.
I have a NVIDA GeForce5200 so there must be some issue with NVIDA and SL.
Please somebody fix it...SL is becoming unplayable.

SL eats my CPU
02-24-2007 18:17
Hi, I have the rebooting problem now as well... I reinstalled windows on the same hardware setup and now all of a sudden SL takes 99% of my CPU power and in about 10 minutes of being in-world I get a blue screen and it reboots. No idea what is wrong here as everything runs fine.
my setup:
AMD Athlon 64 3500 ASUS Radion X800 128mb 1 Gb RAM
But again. SL ran perfect before I reinstalled windows on the C partition.
If anyone has any clue, please let me know, this is getting perty annoying...
Cheers, Eli

thanks for any help Your PC actually reboots after loading up SL? You say this began happening yesterday... have there been any software and or driver updates on your PC in the past few days? Are you running Windows XP home/pro? Have you checked your application system events log? (Does it show any errors?) When your PC reboots.. does it flash any error screens at all? Do you get a BSOD (blue screen of death?)

Cheers, Eli What version of windows are you running? Have you done all of the windows updates for your PC? Have you checked your video drivers and directX version to make sure you have the lasest? Have you checked your motherboard drivers updates? If its the exact same hardware setup.. and the only difference is that you reinstalled windows completely.. it would seem that something is just out of date. When you reinstalled windows did you do a full system format... or did you just reinstall it "over" the old version of windows? Also, what was the reason you did a windows reinstall in the first place?

Hi,
It's quite weird to be honest.
Im using xp home edition + service pack2 all drivers are the latest available ( like how I had it before I reinstalled ).
The reason I had to reinstall was because I bought a new monitor (Iiyama prolite 22" widescreen), keyboard and mouse. Installed the mouse first (ok), then the keyboard (ok), then I put the screen on. For some reason it crashed windows but in a way it didnt want to startup anymore. Tried virtually everything but had no choice to reinstall windows on the c: partition. Thank god, most of the apps. were still ok.
All applications run fine without a problem. Only secondlife is now using 99cpu and makes my pc reboot after a little. I adjusted all settings in SL to widescreen, so that shouldnt be a problem.
Im still clueless bout this.
greetings, Eli

I have been crashing constantly all day Saturday and Sunday. I think it is a Linden bug, they do not want me to be with my baby. Hopefully, they will get this issue resolved soon. I know it is not me.

greetings, Eli What you might want to do is run a test through DxDiag. Just curious to see if it finds anything wrong. 1) Click on Start 2) Click on Run... 3) type: dxdiag -- then hit enter. 4) When it brings up your system information you can click on the display tab and do a test on DirectDraw and Direct3D. If you dont see any type of error messages with that.. the next question would be.. have you tried to reinstall SecondLife (And if so, did you do so to a Seperate folder?) If you reinstalled windows.. and did not reinstall second life afterwards.. that coudl be the simple solution. Also, something you can keep in mind is.. windows does have a system restore feature enabled automatically. Next time you install a new driver.. or piece of software/hardware.. that gives you a blue screen and reboots.. you can start up in safe mode and actually do a system restore to a previous point and it should allow you to bring windows up again and start over.

yea, I did the checks on dxdiag already and they all seem ok. I dont think its video related for some reason. I was wondering. If you reinstall SecondLife, do you lose your inventory !? I quite build up my av. and I dont want to start all over again! Personally I think thats the last option though. Reinstalling SecondLife. Or 256mb for a graphic card is too less for a 22" widescreen and therefor my cpu is crankin up? Sigh, Eli ps. I checked dxdiag again and it seems I do have 256mb grafix mem. ( doh! )

The launch of windows XP was supossed to have memory protection to prevent programmes trying to write over the kernel (core) element of the OS in memory, and subsequent Blue Screen programme failure. It was also supposed to allocate each programme its own 'virtual memory space', this was to allow in the event of a programme failing, it to be frozen so you could save your work before rebooting.
The CPU running at 99% resources is perfectly normal assuming you don't have other programmes running in the background (except virus checker, possible software firewall etc). Trojans, Backdoor hijacking virus's that can survive a re-format of your hard disc, can live in the MBR (Master Boot Record) of your hard disc and re-establish themselves after an re-install. Try running a deep scan of your system with your virus checker, along with installing Defender (anti-spyware) from Microsoft.
You said your applications were okay after a reinstall. For the most part, whilst good news, the majority of programmes when installed, register themselves with the OS and install additional DDL's and drivers. In addition, any potential virus that maybe the cause of the problem, will still exist and re-attach itself to the running programmes. Try carrying out a Restore on your system to say a week before you started having issues, to see if the problem still exisits, should it still exhibit the same problems even with a restore, this could indicate a trojan and or virus.
Windows, used to allowed you to boot into DOS and carryout an unconditional format of your hard disc using the '/u' switch, very few virus's could survive that treatment. Newer versions of windows do not fully format hard drives and introduced the 'quick format' as none of us have time to spare.

there is an nvidia driver conflict that makes sl crash and bluescreen, go to nvidia's website and download the latest driver.

I started a thread just now, but when SL crashes for ne of you, do you get this error message ro something similar?
Instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate the program.
