well i was in the process of putting a fresh system on my system partition and suddently (i still don't know when it happened) the installer and windows report that the said disk has no partitions. The disk itself seems to be healty and in working order so i would say it might have happened during a forced physical restart of the computer, my problem is that ALL my work in sl of 2 years is stuck on this disk windows do not reconise.
As i said the disk is prolly not dammaged but the MFT seems to have taken a hit or something.
Any advice of a recovery tool? so far i used get data back NTFS with mild success (it recover a lot of stuffs but none of my most recent work)
i am currently scanning the disk with "easy recovery" and it will take a few more hours to complete
i am under windows XP currently and the disk is a maxtor 120Gb IDE

Sorry to hear that, I know hard drives only crash when they have irreplaceable data on them Have you tried "Recovery is Possible"? It's a bootable CD that loads a Linux distro with recovery tools. I've used it in the past to access NTFS partitions windows refuses to acknowledge. http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/Not sure this will do much for you... but I figure it's worth a shot, it's free, so the price is right. Good Luck!

Your 'problem' maybe a MBR failure during the forced restart. The MBR (Master Boot Record) is installed when you place an Operating System onto a newly formatted disc, or when you partition a hard disc. Its usually declared during the OS installation. There are 'recovery' tools available on the Internet, but you are better to search the manufacturers website for their own.
Best of luck with that, been there, bought the T shirt etc....

Sorry to hear you're having issues with the drive.
1) DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING - try to get a friend or someone to install it as a secondary harddrive. Then you can get data off it. Sometimes cables, board connectors, etc go bad. This will circumvent all of that and basicly if they can't recover you have one more option.
2) have someone else (preferablly same person as in step 1) install a data recovery software tool and scan your HD. Most recovery tools for windows say they have issues finding data files if the program is installed on the same harddrive. I'd suggest a few but sadly I have lost all of mine. I do know the ones I tried are available for download from download.com and worked well (retireved data and found data that was erased 5 years ago.)
3) Take it to a data recovery service. This is costly though and I would never do this unless you feel the need to commit horrible bodily harm to yourself and/or others.
Hope that helps hun and let us know.
