I have been in world for a little over a week now and have experienced few tech problems so far.
I have been trying to figure out what the best settings for my computer are to achieve the best graphic experience without lagging me down terribly. However since I don't know the difference between "normal" lag and lag I've introduced because of my settings I don't know what to select.
I spoke on the phone with LL tech help and asked around in world telling people what the specs of my computer are but the only advice I get is to read a WIKI. Well as someone in another thread mentioned, I can read a WIKI for hours and not really find what I am looking for.
So I am curious if there is anyone out there has a reccommendation as to what I should have my EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> NETWORK, GRAPHIC and ADV. GRAPHIC placed at.
I have a brand new computer, 3 weeks old with the following specs. 3.0MgHz - 512 MB of RAM, 200 GIG hard driver. High speed cable internet at 6Mbps down and 768 up. I do not have an additional graphics card other than the one that came with the computer (Intel), but my computer maker (Gateway) says it has 256 MB of RAM on it.
I have updated all drivers so that's already done. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Rick.

Hi ReallyRick! Well, unfortunately, you know what they say about "the weakest link in the chain". I'd start by finding out specifically what sort of Intel graphics processor you have -- it sounds to me like it's an integrated chipset, and if that's the case, you won't be getting good performance out of SL because it slows everything else down. I'm also on the dubious side that it has "256 MB" of dedicated memory, unless we can get more specifics here.
Here's an easy way for you to check!
Open up Second Life, go to the HELP menu, and select ABOUT SECOND LIFE... you'll see somethin' that says "OPENGL RENDERER", post back here what it says -- actually, it might be helpful for you to copy and paste that whole block of info. All that schtuff comes in handy.

Heres a easy way to find what your computer is click start : run : dxdiag [enter] It will show alot of things in Directx Diagnostic Tools, under display tab youll see your video card info Name : Chip Type : Total Memory : Unfortunatly Intel video card is pretty bad one, so you would have to set your settings pretty low. Graphics; Anistropic Filtering : off Local Light : off [this hit you bigtime ingame, few use it] Shadows : off [leads to crashes when you enable this latly] Disable Far Clip : off [eeh mine is always off on this one] Shiny Objects : off [you miss out on alot without this in SL -.-] Avatar Rendering; Normal Terrain Detail; None Rest doesnt really matter much. Adv.Graphics Agp ; on/off [doesnt matter no speed gain] Texture Cache ; small [512 mb ram] Video Card Memory ; ? not to sure , check your vid card Object Detail ; eh dont go to low everything looks like blocks ^^; try out some Tree Detail ; lowest Avatar Detail ; lowest Avatar Vertex Program ; play with it, on/off, guessing you need to have it off Draw Distance ; 64 Fog Distance ; well i dont like fog so mine is 4 , 0.5 = loads of fog, 4 = no fog Drop draw distance ; ? not to sure i use 0 , i guess 5? Bumpiness draw distance ; 0 Max Particle count ; youd be better off disabling it, that one can really hurt if you dont have a good vid card , so 0 Outfit composite limit ; i still dont get what this does, mines 50 no diffrence then at 0, so 0 Anyhoo,, check dxdiag and see what vid card you have, if its a Intel graphics things youre in bad luck as SL doesnt support it.

Get a dedicated graphics card, you dont actually have on onboard, you have a Graphics chipset on the motherboard; this is probably what's causing your lag. The rest of the PC seems fine for playing SL, although a little more RAM might go a long way, it's not going to be needed. -Adam
