Hey guys , can anyone help? I purchased a Dell Inspiron XPS notebook, supposedly the best Dell notebook for gaming.. and now when I try to log into SL, the entire screen freezes and I have to shut the computer down in the middle of process.

Video card: ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
Motherboard: I'm not sure how to find this out, can someone help?

I've been told multiple things, and I'm not sure which is correct.

Dell never sent a CD-Rom with ATI Software.. were they supposed to?

I tried installing "CATALYST" for any those of you who are familiar with ATI.. and it says Video Card Not Found! (That worried me a little...) But when I go into device manager, there it is!

When I go into Add/Remove Programs I see:
ATI - Software Uninstall Utility
ATI Control Panel
ATI Display Driver

Is it safe to uninstall any of these?

omega drivers
http://www.omegadrivers.net/

The official Ati Notebook drivers support these
Mobility™ Radeon® X800
Mobility™ Radeon® X700

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=19546

Good luck with that one tho.

I dont know how they work, but its pretty much uninstall everything with ati, reboot, install omega drivers, reboot, see if SL start, im sure it worked for some.

Ati and laptops/notebooks are in my book badly supported by ATI , Omega page seem to do their work

Where you able to fix the problem? I have an ATI card as well. Every now and then Second Life tells me that it cant support 16 bit...though my settings are on 32 bit....I have come to realize that when this happens something had corrupted my drivers.

at that point, what I do is uninstal secondlife and then install the most recent version of the omegadrivers.net drivers...reinstall sl and then reboot. At that point, everythig works fine for me.

After several unsuccessful, crashed, attempts to login to SL using my Dell Inspiron 5100 (ATI Mobility Radeon 7500) laptop, I determined that I would likely never be able to use my laptop for my "second life". But, after reading the response in this thread, I downloaded and installed the Omega drivers for my on-board graphics adapter (version 2.6.53) and I am now, so far, able to login to SL without crashing! Admittedly, I've only confirmed that I can log in and view my normal surroundings for a minute or two and haven't yet played for any length, but this is far beyond the point I was able to reach using the latest Dell drivers.

Thanks to Thili Playfair for the suggestion!

The Radeon 7500 isn't compatible with Second Life; we require an 8500 or greater.
