Getting Started

This is a repost, I had it in SL answers but I'm getting no response so I guess that may be the wrong forum. I am at a loss with this so could someone please help me?


Im very new to all this and I'm having real problems getting started on SL. I created a name/account, I logged in and everything seemed to load up ok. I can see trees and land and water and a couple of people standing there static (editting their appearance or just standing there) and I'm also able to pan the camera around and zoom out and in.

But I can't see my own character / avatar and i can't move around the world. If I click the edit menu, the "appearance" option is greyed out so that I can't even select that.

Am I supposed to see the world in the 1st or 3rd person and why can't I move around. It doesnt feel intuitive like a normal 1st or 3rd person online game usually would.

I can't find anything in the FAQs about this. Have I done something wrong in the set-up?

It would be helpful to know a little about your computer. It sounds like it may not be up to snuff for SL, although this current update has been very problematic.

CPU type & speed
System RAM
Video card & amount of video RAM
Type & speed of Internet connection

2.0Mbps DSL Connection

Not the fastest system out there but I would say it's more than enough for SL. Another point is I had these problem when I first tried it (few weeks back) before the update and today I uninstalled SL created a new account and installed the latest release package ... same problem.

I have no idea what the problem is, I have the Basic free account at the mo because I'm only testing it, would that be the problem?

The SL world loads up plenty quick but I just have no in game avatar, it's like Im spectating from a fixed position. I tried to IM some people around where I load up but I get no response, that may be due to not knowing the proper etiquette or perhaps they don't even recieve the IM, i don't knwow
