This morning I tried to find a particular place. I selected 'places' in the find dialog, entered a search string for part of the store name, and the 'search' button remained greyed out. I had to switch to the 'all' tab and search there, and weed through a bunch of crap that was not Places, when I knew it was a Place I wanted to find.

Make sure you're not filtering out places in Mature Regions...

The actual name of the location would help, as well, to verify that it happens to others as well.

I never filter out Mature regions. I was searching for "BB", trying to find "BB Warehouse Mall", and the search button never lit up as selectable on the Places tab. I suspect the problem was that it only works if you enter three or more characters. But two characters worked fine when using the 'all' tab...

You need to supply 3 characters to search for a place, don't know why.

3 Characters

Putting in 3 characters helps keep down the number of junk returns.

If you search for "BB" you're very likely to return a stack of results having nothing to do with what you're looking for: buBBle bath, etc..

Some other comments on search:

Something I found very confusing as a newbie was that you can't put a Sim name in the Find > Places and get a result back.

Also, if you're looking for a specific item you might want to try http://www.second411.com/. It's my search engine for searching just for items in Second Life.
