Heyos ^_^

For the past month or so, my internet has been flashing out. At first we thought it was just normal, because our IS{ is wireless, and its been a little bit bad weather, etc... however, today I made a discovery.

If I unplug and replug in the router (Power), then the internet comes back immediately.

Whats going on?

My router is a Netgear router, here's what it says on the bottom

108 MBps Wireless Firewall Router WGT624

And no, I'm not using it wireless, I've got cable running to it, and the internet outage affects our whole network from the router.

A little additional info:

The reason I'm posting this is that it happened when I cleared my cache and promplty logged into a very full sim, at bondage ranch. So it was downloading my inventory, the surounding area, about 40 people, and everything within 200m as well.

Also happens a bit often when I'm on SL and my family is working on their computers at the same time (Not in SL, only I use SL). Especially often when they are watching a streaming video too.

Seems like I'm throwing too much at it maybe =/

You may be onto something. :) I have to power cycle my router often too. It started about 4 months ago and since my router was over 4 years old I figured it needed replacing and I got a new one. The problem still happens though not as often (only about once a week instead of every other day). Old router............Netgear. New router........Linksys.

My old router was Linksys, but it died after about 4 months.. it kept power cycling on its own, for no real reason.. we got a netgear..its only about 3 months old now. Seems like it should work fine =P

What you're describing could be happening at either end, you or the service provider (esp. given that its ... what, satellite?).

FIrstly, test your link for bandwidth (use one of the bandwidth measuring apps at dslreports.com, if your service provider didn't give you one). You may have your network bandwidth preference in SL set too high, and simply be flooding the link, PARTICULARLY when your family is also gaming or watching video. Try to divvy up the bandwidth a bit ... if they're doing high-bandwidth things, set yours low. It responds immediately, you do not have to restart SL.

I don't know the model Netgear that you're using, but I've used their larger routers and switches, and in general they are teh suxxors. Vastly different behavior with different versions of software, sometimes barely standards compliant, uncertain ethernet negotiation ... bah! anyway.

With this particular one, look to see if there is an upgrade available for the software. Even if it's barely out of the box, it could have been sitting around in a warehouse for a while. Also, look at its manual - it probably has a little web management interface, and you might be able to look for errors that it has been producing.

Not satellite, no, just wireless.. as in there is a tower on a Butte about 2 miles away, and because we are in direct line, we can receive it.. not sure anything more about their setup lol, but its a lot cheaper than satellite.

And thankies, I'll check my bandwidth ^_^
