I'm wondering if anyone knows of any way to stop SL from sucking up 100% of my system ram & processor ability. In the There.com application there is a tweak where you can create the following:

System Properties
Advanced
Environmental Variables
New User Variables
Variable name: THERESLEEP
Variable value: 1

This is supposed to achieve the desired result. I'm trying to run multiple apps on my rig and SL hogs sooo much.

Thoughts?

None. SL uses all your CPU (though RAM I've never seen used more than 300mb) because a majority of the 3d rendering is done on your CPU. You want better performance get more ram (or if you are lucky and have a dual core chip move SL to the secondary core).

Minimize it, then it only uses 50%!
On the downside, you can't see or do anything though...

Seriously, though, IIRC you can set the thread priority (using task manager) to low and then most other things will take precendence.

This is one of the examples pointing to why SL is very demanding on your CPU.

Is there an equivalent to show how much % of your graphics card power SL is using?

Just curious Ron, how is moving to the secondary core done?

Thanxies in advance!

To set affinity, open the task manager (control+alt+delete) and go to "processes" , right click on "Secondlife.exe" and click "set affinity". you will need to choose a processor so uncheck either the 0 or the 1.

Basicly what I can gather SL is single threaded compared to WinXP wich is multithreaded. What this means is SL is meant to be run on 1 CPU where as WinXP can be run accross multipul CPUs. Dunno if LL fixed it or not because people reported having issues back in Oct with multicore performance issues. Thing is its not just SL who has this issue so I dunno if LL bothered to actually do anything about it since this is a 3rd party fix.

Note: CPU 1 would be the secondary core.

There are some ways to achieve this on one processor, sl doesnt really use 100% processor all the time, although it does request that it gets all the processor time as it will need it, so the displays in task manager can be slightly confusing, while in task manager you can set sl to run on a lower priority this will free up some cpu time for other apps but make sl more laggy, while if you want sl to have more of the systems resources you can run sl at above normal, where the desktop will probably become slightly laggy, but sl will be getting abit more cpu time

Good stuff. Thank you all. Oh, by the way, how much RAM are you all running?

1GB, I wouldn't be happy with any less. :)

I'm currently running 1 gig. Hopefully by the end of the month I'll have 2.

1.5 GB. I previously was running 512 MB and when I upgraded I was floored at what a difference it made.

Thanx for the info, that clears it up.
