My mouse has stopped working in the main window of SL. It'll work on the UI (buttons, inventory, etc.) and that's it. I can't left click on anything, right click anything or use my camera controls (which is the most annoying).

It stopped working soon after I updated my video drivers. I've done everything I can think of to try and fix this:

~Rolled back driver
~Check for mouse driver updates
~unplugged graphics tablet
~uninstalled/reinstalled SL
~full screen/windowed (you never know)
~can't system restore because some dumb idiot turned that off (looks away sheepishly)
~bang mouse on desk
~bang head with mouse

Short of a sledge hammer, I'm out of ideas. Any one have a clue of what could be wrong? I'm hoping it's just some stupid radio button I need to click or something. Any advise is great appreciated.

Thanks,
HeatherDawn

I have a pretty odd idea, but this seem to work with some older things that plain refuse to let me install them, less play them,, make a new user , log in that , then try to see if SL do the same.

For some reason that work with programs and games that wont let me install them with the normal account (i have no idea why)

Ack. Do you still have the installation disk that the mouse came with? A clean wipe of the drivers and then a fresh install might do it.

I worked on a PC that had strange mouse problems but it was due to being riddled with all sorts of virii and spyware. They ended up buying a new mouse, which fixed their problem. I guess there's always that option....and its just about the cheapest piece of hardware to replace, so it may be cheaper in the long run to just get a new one rather than spend all sorts of time trying to fix it.

Unless you already have a supercool ultra expensive mouse. In which case I pass this along to those smarter than I.

Are you actually seeing the cursor over the SL window? Is it just that you can't click unless it's on the SL UI, or can you not actually see where the pointer's pointing?

I tried using SL as a differnt user. Nothing

Yes I can see the cursor in the window, it just doesn't do anything. When I press CTRL it turns into the little hand and when I press ALT it turns into what ever that little thingy is, it just won't respond to clicking.

OH, and I just tested my scroll button to see if it would zoom in and out. IT DOES! So, apparently it's just the buttons that aren't working.

I am thinink I might have to get a new one. (Give me a good excuse to get one of those wireless laser ones ;) ). Where would I find the drivers for the mouse if the mouse came with the computer??

Thanks for everyone's help so far...

Been awhile since I've seen this one. It's historically been tied to the graphics drivers; since you updated those when this happened, it's doubly likely that that's the case.

Try these steps:

1) First, turn off your antivirus temporarily! This is very important. Antivirus protects important system files; installing graphics drivers overwrites important system files. Leaving antivirus enabled while updating drivers may result in driver corruption.
2) Next, go to the Windows Control Panel, open the Add/Remove Programs utility. If there's an entry for "ATI Display Drivers" or "nVidia Display Drivers", uninstall it.
3) You will likely have to reboot your computer. Make sure antivirus is still disabled when you return to Windows.
4) Visit the website for your graphics card manufacturer (ATI or nVidia), and download and install the latest Display Driver release.
5) Once your computer has installed the drivers and rebooted, you can turn antivirus back on, and make any display adjustments (such as increasing resolution).

You may also want to install the latest version of DirectX at http://microsoft.com/directx

Thanks soo much Lee, that did the trick. But darn your hide, now I can't justify getting a new mouse. :P

Thanks a ton,
