Just thought I'd post to see if anyone else was having this issue. If I run SL for anything more than 5 hours, I get a message stating my computer is out of memory, and it says to close programs to free up more.

Now here's the strange part. I got this message on my old computer (which wasn't a bad computer at all) and I just build this new computer that I'm on currently not more than 3 days ago. Here are the specs for the new one:

AMD Phenom 9850 Quad Core
2.51 GHz
8 Gigs RAM
Dual ATI 3800 Video Cards, 512mb each running crossfire
Windows XP Pro 64bit OS
CCC version 2008.0328.2322.39969

so.. with that having been said.. can someone please explain to me why I run out of memory when the ONLY program i'm running is SL?

My old computer specs:
AMD Athlon 64 Processor
2.41 GHz
2 Gigs RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP
Windows XP Pro Versioin 2002 SP 2
Latest CCC version (not typing the whole thing out :P)

My old computer wasn't the top of the line but it certainly wasn't a slouch machine either. Both are built by me and I'm not a noob when it comes to computers :P I've expanded the virtual memory on both machines. I run a RAM optimizer as well that screams bloody murder everytime I run SL.

My version of SL is:
Second Life Release
1.19.1(4)

I only installed that version because I was getting the same out of memory message from the so called "stable" version in use.

Hi Tempest. I can't help you much, but I can natter on a bit and give you a bump.

How are you making use of the 8G of ram on the new machine? I thought any one instance of XP could only make use of 3.2G. Is your ram optimizer virtualizing XP's ram, or are you using it as a ramdisk, or what?

If the two machines had the same available RAM, I would say that you are running into two things:

1. Your video cards each require a chunk of RAM, so the new machine actually has less available than your old one, and

2. The newer builds have lots of memory leaks, try Nicholaz's client. I assume you would want the Windlight version, based on 1.19.1.4:

I am having the same issue,
Intel Core2 Duo 2.2Ghz
4 Gigs ddr2 667
Nvidia Geforce 8800 Gts 640
Windows Vista Ultimate (Sp1)
Four hours or so building the system runs out of ram. It seems that there is a memory leak in the new client.

He said he's running 64-bit Windows. That version can address up to 16GB RAM.

Hello Guys,
There are Two Types of Memory, let me put it in a Simple Way:
- Physical Memory: is the RAM (Hardware Piece).
- Virtual Memory: is Virtual, it's not real, but It uses your HD to create memory space. Somtimes errors happen when your HD is full.

What you are going to do now is to increase your page file (Win XP ~ Nearly similar in Vista):
My computer "Right click" ---> Properties ---> Advanced ---> Performance ---> Settings ---> Advanced ---> Virtual Memory ---> Change.

If you don't know how much you need to increase your page file, you can simply select "system managed size". APPLY OKEY

Hope this will solve it.

I get the same issue i think it has something to do with sl as my older pc which was less specs than what i have now had no problems, mind u the build of sl was different then, but i found out that hol on even on this new pc it was working fine untill i had to format my drive one day n ever since they came out with the windlight, ive notice that i kept getting them error messages , ive upgraded so many times but this new upgrade is the worse as my monitor keeps flashing on that one when its on and then it crashes, so i gone back to the build 1.91 of sl and that will run fine for awhile well as long as i dont do anything intensive, i mean i could have it on and im dancing and then soon as i hit to walk it crashes.

Even with the latest fresh install of the OS (Windows), I always advise downloading and installing the latest version of .NET Framework (version 2 or more for XP, and version 3 or more for Vista). SL is an OpenGL platform which uses the runtime libraries of .NET Framework.

I've been running XP 32, Vista 32 and Vista 64 for sometime, each with the latest versions of .NET Framework and do not suffer a lot of the issues many do with memory.

hi everyone, sorry for taking so long to respond back.

1st, I have already maxed out my page file amount so if it needs more than that.. SL's just being a pig.

2nd, I'm Running FreeRam XP Pro 64 bit to manage my Ram and watch for issues. I am not getting the stack heap error of being out of memory as much in the last two days as I had previously... now what I'm getting is what looks like a memory leak.

If I leave SL running for to long, it sucks up all my Ram after a while and just locks up now. My Ram Optimizer is saying that SL is using up to 6.7 megs of Ram?? Thats retarded considering most systems can't go higher than 4 megs.

It's looking like the SL Tire picked up a nail and has a slow leak.. maybe someone can patch it.

=)

Try this,
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Shows a more detailed info about memory use on a program, most of the time SL will devour your memory when you teleport around as it doesnt release it, when people teleport in and out, you get their textured cached to ram thats why it tends to bloat out of controll.

I gotten this myself but its quite rare as i rarly teleport much anymore then 5~6 places then im dead bored , but spend 10~27 hours without memory crash, so i guess im doing something right.

Memory LEAK in Client!!!
04-21-2008 19:37
With this new version I have had tons of crashes not to mention a very odd "Your System Out of Memory"..... The next message is crash..........

This usually means the program can't release used and swap out so it just stacks and stacks and stacks until BAM... you are history...

I have never in all my life of computing had this happen and I use some very heavy duty programs all at the same time all day long....

That was until the new releases of SL... Something is very very wrong with the "client program". The longer you are in world the more lag that appears and your pc starts to really bog. Get out of SL and back in and your good to go for a while more, then the same thing...

It is not a personal system problem... It is a software problem contained in the client... Come on SL engineers, please take a look. Before the past release I could easily run SL 24/7 even with 2, yes 2 running at the same time.... Nothing on my end has changed so.......................

I posted this under "Current Version Feedback". Been using PC's for over 20 years.... This is a first............

Memory leaking? Try NICHOLAZ!

http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2008/04/release-eye-candy-ec-e.html

Patched versions of the windlight, pre-windlight, and even paleolithic pre-voice viewers. Linux and MAC versions pointed to there as well.

Hmmmm... I used to see the memory leak happening.

I tend to hang out in a very prim/script heavy, laggy sim for hours. I don't have the memory issues anymore. SL just keeps going & going & going...

I'm convinced the new client has a memory leak, because I get the same problem: Windows running out of free memory.

I can run two clients for an hour or so, without problems. But if I run just one client for more than 3 hours or so, I run out of memory. This can happen when I'm just staying in one place and building, too.

Sure, I only have 2GB memory (win XP). But I used to be able to run 3 clients at once for much longer.

Nicholaz fixed a big one in 1.19.1.4. His version is noticably better with memory. It sports an older-style Communicate window as well.

SL has a memory leak. I get the same thing after 4 or 5 hours, if I teleport around a lot. I can sit in one sim for a very long time. When I teleport to 20-30 different places in that 4-5 hours, it starts slowing down and eventually crashes.

Yes, I know that's a lot of places but I'm new and I like shopping and exploring. =)

I have this same issue. The most current viewer does this to me after a couple of hours and I'm not moving around alot maybe 1 or 2 teleports and the release candidate 1.20RC6 viewer does it even more often about every hour or so which is very annoying cause I figured that maybe this was fixed in the RC but nope and every time it crashes its always same and makes a crash report which I upload every time.

Computer Specs:
XFX 790i Ultra SLI
Intel QA9650 @3.17GHz
4 Gigabytes DDR3
XFX 9800 GX2 times 2(Quad SLI)
Vista Home Premium X64
