A friend has a Dell PC fitted with an ATI Radeon 128MB DDR 9800 pro. The PC is about 6 months old (XP SP2). She has just started using SL (still on free trial). SL does not detect this card as AGP, and does not have the option of overiding this setting. We have the latest drivers from ATI, no chipset reported errors, no alternative cards, no onboard graphics. She is reporting poor graphics performance. So, two questions...
1) Even though the card is not reported as AGP, will it still be treated as such and not affect the graphics performance?
2) If not, How can we force SL to be aware that this is an AGP card?
(Friend not really computer literate, and several hudred miles away)
Thanks,
Neb.

Thanks for the reply. You prompted me to try an experiment. I unticked AGP on my pc (Nvidia) and the frame rate dropped by 15%, re-selected AGP, and restored the framerate.
A lower framerate will have to be accomodeted by reducing other settings.
One odd thing on my friend's PC though is that she can see invisible stuff, such as chimeras and hidden animation balls, which I don't think will be an AGP issue, more likely an OpenGL problem, but I'm guessing - I don't really know enough. I'm sure that somebody will though.
Thank's again

The AGP tick most definately has an effect on framerate and speed.
ATI has issues with OpenGL and that as you know is what SL uses to run. Have your friend write a letter to ATI complaining about Open GL on it and then have them go buy a decent video card like an Nvidia.

So far as I know, SL is still hardcoded to disable the AGP option for ATI cards. You can't turn it on. The reason for this was persistent crashes, and I suspect, a good deal of finger pointing on both ATI and Linden's parts. The Lindens maintain that it's a problem with ATI not meeting the OpenGL spec. In similar cases, though not, to my knowledge, with SL, ATI has responded, saying they provide other features that could be used instead. So whatever. Long story short, you're not going to get it to work, because it's turned off because it doesn't work.
