Okay so I FINALLY got a new video card and it is fantastic. I never knew SL looked so good. ANYWAY...I happened to check and see what sorta FPS I was getting and I had to take a snap of it because it just didn't seem possible.
Is this clearly an error?

A Nvidia GeForce 6600GT PCI-E. Nothing spectacular but I still assume that FPS reading had to be like wrong.

I have a 6800 and my SL doesn't perform as good as that.. I average about 14-15 fps.

Yeah, give us your full machine specs!
I know if you go sit at the edge of an empty SIM and look out into blank, I can get 100+ FPS

Uh that's probably when you're not seeing anything the FPS deteriorates quickly once things become rezzed. That's typical FPS if you're just seeing a blank screen in front of you.

Heh, if it looks smooth, feels smooth, and you've got a smile on your face, then it's for REAL.

Is this clearly an error? Run, Doc! The Libyans know you swiped their plutonium! Don't make me have to go back in time and do all that 1955 crap over again. Yours Sincerely, Marty S. McFly.

It's looks smooth, feels smooth, and you'd probably have a smile on your face, because the only time you would ever drink one would be when you're not alone.

The 7800 GTX is a great card but not blindingly better than the 6800 or even the 6600 gt. I think I read it is in the 20-30% better on some games and such not a whole lotta difference on others. Of course putting a 7800 on a 2.2 P4 would be a waste because the video card would be hampered by the CPU. The 6600GT is the best bang for the buck at the moment and most can be overclocked to 6800 speeds or better.

I was running on a 5950 until before the weekend, but I've just got a new computer with a 7800GTX. And wow is all I can say. Even coupled with my new 24" wide screen monitor, running SL in a window at approx 1920 x 1200 I'm getting FPS I just can't believe. At least 2-3 times greater than on the 5950 (and not running that above a window sized of 1024 x 768.) The 7800GTX is one mean graphics processor is all I can say. I've never seen SL look so smooth (in fact I didn't think it was possible for it to look so smooth).

The jump from the 5xxx series to the 6xxx series is considered the largest single jump in quality and performance in graphic card history. Skipping a generation will make it an even bigger improvement. Seladore: What are your specs? What are your framerates?

Kathmandu,
I have 2.6 P4 with 1Gb RAM, running XP Home Edition. As I said, a 6800GT card. My connection is 1Mb (not sure if that's the right representation, but you know what I mean) and I have tested it frequently over a period of time. My slowest speed tested was 902Kb and the fastest was 980Kb.
I have nothing clicked except shiny and disable far clip. To get a halfway decent framerate in a good sim (between 5 and 20) I have to cut my draw distance right down. It is very rarely above 128. In a crowded area or a mall I have to cut it to 64, and even then I often get framerates of between 0.4 and 2.5.
I have noticed that when the framerate becomes unusable (<1) if I reboot, it will improve significantly for a while, before tending to drop again.
I have also noticed that my framerate often fluctuates, in a kind of distorted sine wave, going from very low <1 to very high (for me) 20 and back again repeatedly.

Let's just try and imagine 200fps. Here are just some of the frames that make up a single second of visual, at 200fps Same Same Same Same Same Same Same Start of fly's wing flap wing flap wing flap wing flap ... (50 frames) wing flap end of wing flap same same same same same you get the picture Would be funny though, it'd be the same picture being drawn over and over, cause let's face it, nothing happens that fast
