I'm trying to flat out start up SL, and nothing will work. It brings up the SL Crash logger, then just stops. The game refuses to load. I had it running just yesterday.

# Have you tried restarting your computer?
Highly likely, but worth mentioning.

# Have you tried reinstalling Second Life?
Note: uninstall via Control Panel before reinstalling.

# Have you tried deleting the settings & cache files manually (I imagine you can't do this via the client because it keeps crashing)?

Just delete the directory at:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\SecondLife

<username> reflects your username on that system.

You will have to show hidden folders to see that directory (so you can delete it). To do that:

Open explorer, click tools > folder options > view; check the show hidden files and folders item.

Just some ideas to try.

SL was installed on my external hard drive, and when I went looking, neither the F nor the C drives had any cache folders.

I have reinstalled it several times.

I have not restarted my computer yet. I'll try that next.

So you did the following before looking:

# Open Windows Explorer
# Click tools > folder options > view tab
# Check the show hidden files and folders item.

You won't see the cache folder unless you do that.

Of course, this assumes you're using Windows.

The game will NOT start if you are in 16 bit color mode. You'll get a blink on your screen, then the crash logger.

I learned this the hard way. Some how the setting was changed on a computer which I was setting up and I spent HOURS trying to figure out why SL would not start. Then I noticed the blurry fonts in windows explorer, and thought, "I'd better fix that", not realizing that it had anything to do with SL.

Once I set it back to 32-bit, SL fired right up.
Check your resolution settings.
