....and this is where I was told to come for help with my crashing problem. At the risk of angering Those In Charge, I'm just going to plop down my problem here and HOPE that somehow, someone will have pity!
When I try to run Second Life from the shortcut on my desktop, I get a message saying I have an "out of date SiS chipset driver". So, being totally computer illiterate, I Googled that phrase, and was brought to a website that appears to be able to help me. (SiS download center) Unfortunately, it expects me to be able to select options from menus, and the options might as well be Greek - I have no idea what they mean or what to do now.
I know I have Windows XP. My next set of choices are:
SATA & RAID
GPU Graphics Drivers
IGP Graphics Drivers
Audio Driver
Network Driver
IDE Driver
AGP (GART) Driver
Embedded System

and I have no idea what to select! AND there's another menu of selections that will come after I make a choice of these ones!!!
Is there anyone here who is willing to help me? Am I even in the right place to be asking this????

i'm assuming Isablan has a good point, i've moved this thread from Resident Answers (sorry, Patchouli.. i should have known better) to Technical Issues.

(i'm leaving a re-direct so Patchouli can find her thread/answers)

Edit: Patchouli.. your graphics card was: Hercules 3D Prophet 4500, correct?

Wow, I haven't seen one of those in a LONG time. The Kyro GPU was a newcomer to the 3D graphics market that was supposed to challenge ATi and Nvidia. Unfortuantely, it didn't work out. Frankly, I have no clue if it'll even work with SecondLife. It's possible I guess. Just make sure you have the latest drivers. HERE
Those drivers are dated February of 2003, so you can get an idea of how old the card is.

As for chipset drivers, I'd have to know the model number of your motherboard to be sure I could point you to the right ones. It doesn't sound like you'd be comfortable with discovering the model number on your own, so it might be best to contact the manufacturer of your computer for the latest drivers.

Oh, Lord, I don't know who the manufacturer of any of my hardware could possibly be - I've got a cobbled-together by my Uncle-in-Law PC Special - it's got ALL kinds of issues......I've no idea where any of the parts even came from, much less who made them......I'm getting the sinking feeling that I'll never get in here at Second Life......figures, just as I found a cool place to go, too!
Thanks anyway.....
