Is the Disappearing Content Bug Fixed?

This bug would be worthy of an immediate patch and I think we deserve to know if it has been fixed and what the specific status of this bug is.. I think that everyone would like to know SPECIFICALLY when this will be fixed..

Example:
I came to my new shop today. As I walked up to it, my shop sign and one of the columns just 'went away'. As I was typing in the bug report, one of the floor panels disappeared and came back.

I asked others nearby. They reported seeing the same thing I was seeing. With half of my shop gone (sometimes my vendor objects), I don't understand how I'm supposed to be a successful merchant.

This has been bug reported since 1.10.34. I turned off Object-Object-Occlusion in the Debug menu. It does nothing. This bug is NOT a client issue. The objects are not being reported to the clients. They can not be selected.

More info: My landlord did a prim count. The objects are missing from his prim count when they disappear.

My frustration level is beyond controllable. I don't know whether to laugh, cry, throw my computer out the window, or what.

Yesterday I placed an object where one had disappeared, thinking it had been returned to my inventory or deleted. After I rebuilt the object, the second one re-appeared and I had two (almost lined up, but not quite). I deleted one of them. Today, the second one is gone...and I don't know if I should rebuild it.

Should I make a copy of my entire shop and place it at the same coordinates? I'll need more prims..

Please please please walk over to Technical and ask them if this is fixed in the Wed patch and post here. If it's not - can we get a date/time? I'm paying rent on this space and it's beyond frustrating.

Duke, I haven't personally heard of such a serious bug in recent times.

I'm going to move this to Technical Issues. If you have a reproduction for this which I can do on my own land, please don't hesitate to post it. Same goes for everyone else, ruling out the possibility that they're scripted or temp-on-rez.

I've seen this frequently in this version. I've found if I swing my camera around wildly, the missing wall or floor will frequently reappear. Then another wall or floor will disappear for a while.

The problem has not been fixed. I posted earlier this morning about items that have gone missing from my account. The latest incident occurred last night, So far I have lost 1` new airplane and 70 disco/club lights. They disappear from the world and are not returned to their file, Lost and Found nor Trash.

Prim coiunt has not the reason for these instances of diassapeaance.

^ That's different from content loss where a prim is actually gone and doesn't come back.

We do know of a big where "prims disappear then reappear".

There's also this related thread:

I didn't experience this bug myself yet, but I have been told it is related to Occlusion Culling. So the items do not really "disappear" but are taken out of the scene, because the renderer incorrectly assumes them being hidden by another object. You should be able to get them back into view by panning your camera around the position where they are supposed to be.

There are TWO different bugs
06-14-2006 05:18
1. Occlusion Culling - Stuff just goes away due to camera, zoom, whatever.
I believe this is workaround-able with Debug/Render and turn off Object-Object Occlusion for building purposes..but it still doesn't help when your vendors disappear to your customers. How can you sell stuff from invisible vendors.

2. The BAD BUG is the one where stuff just goes away forever.
Two objects on land I lease disappeared yesterday.
1. I did NOT delete them. I logged in, tp'ed over and one of them was just GONE.
1a. The Landlord, Chilly Charlton, did not delete them. He suggested I speak with Live Help.
2. They are not in my Trash or Lost and Found. I checked.
3. They were not culled. The lot prim count decremented. They're gone from the server.
4. It's not just me - others in the sim see that they're gone. It's not my cache.
5. The sign and the column were both there for at least a full day, and properly group-set, so they weren't deleted for build restrictions.
6. They were NOT returned to me (no IM or messages)
7. One (the sign) was deleted prior to my arriving at the lot. The second (the column) was deleted while I was standing there, rotating my camera in hopes that the sign would re-appear.
8. The items that disappeared are not temp-on-rez nor contain ANYTHING, even scripts.

I, of course, have no way to make this recur. But I can tell you I'm not the only one with the problem.

POSSIBILITY: Perhaps the objects are being occluded on my end, and my client is updating the server that I want the objects deleted? Causing their permanent removal?

The first problem is out and out frustrating, but adding in this second problem, I am going friggin' nuts. I have no way of knowing if I should re-create something because it disappeared. I have no way to trust if its gone, not gone, culled, whatever?!!

Two days ago, I recreated the sign, put it in place, and the original sign re-appeared next to the one I was lining up!!

If you haven't heard of this problem, suggest you look at bug reports (I've filed 3 so far) and speak with Live Help (I've asked them twice or three times for possible workarounds)

I am at Wit's End. I have cried over this, pounded my fists, yelled at my wife, kicked the dog and I'm in need of blood pressure medicine.

PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS FAST!

Given my understanding of how the system works, I doubt that the renderer deciding to not render a prim would translate into an affirmative request to remove the prim.

My conjecture is this is just an intensification of the asset server overload problems. These first began manifesting as building silent failures-to-commit where it would take multiple tries to texture an item (this was likely the client accepting a modify, rendering it, sending the update request to the server, having the server drop it and the client re-rendering the old "stable" store on the next update pass). This phenomenon then extended to prim "snap-back" where any modification (size, position, etc.) would not "stick" much to the frustration of builders.

There was some talk recently of splitting the asset load across multiple proxies. This requires good cache coherency mechanisms - something that has been historically poorly done in SL (and is hard to do generally). If there are two versions of "what should be here" and the older one is incorrectly decided to be more "authoritative", you'd see exactly this. It is a scalabilty problem which is the central problem of SL and one they've been working on for at least the last year. The big roadblock is they are trying to fix a fundamental design limitation with band-aids and it has not been working well.

Expect it to get worse until such a time as the whole persistence model is replaced (which would be a mammoth effort that I don't see anywhere near the horizon).

Sigh.

Sadly this has happened to me a lot also, but I've just stared at it and said...Wtf? Then all of a sudden the prims reappear. Weird, hope they fix ASAP!

Build Impossible
06-14-2006 09:02
It's downright impossible to build or do ANYTHING in SL because of this BUG.

Combine this with the new and improved CRIPPLED inventory system and you have a bug party the size of an african fire-ant mound!

Maybe I'll go play CivIV for a few weeks - wake me when its over. :-P

In my case the disappearance has nothing to do with rendering or temporarily disappearing prims.

As I noted, to date I have lost 90+ hi-end club/disco lights (70 yesterday + 20 more today) which cost me 46,000+ Ls and a new airplane. In the case of the airplane, it was a copyable object and the physical plane AND the copyable file have both disappeared. This was a high -end plane made by one of SLs top aircraft builders and it is doubtful the problem is with his scripting or building. The disco ligts were also high-end uniits made by one SLs top builders.

As I mentioned in another post both of these sellers have been generous in offering to replace my items. The aircraft has already been replaced but I am hesitant to burden the disco-light seller with such a request (valued at 45,000 Ls) cuz I fear that they would just dissappear again and for that reason I would be extremely hesitant to place them in the world.

This really sux.

I have now re-activated my account subscriptions to other on-line games that I had not touched since entering the SL World. This BUG is not a promising development for the future growth of SL.
