Hi,

Don't know exactly where to put this question.
For a couple of months ago i was quit active in Secondlife, i really liked it. I wasn't able (very busy) to get on Secondlife the last few months. While trying to use it again, i get an error every time, i downloaded it over and over again, but every time i get the following error; 'Critical Error Unable to start networking, error 2'. I manage to log in, but are unable to open Secondlife, i really hope someone can help me further, so i will be able to use Secondlife !!!

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,
Eva

Hi Eva,

I am not sure this is specific to Second Life — has anyone else seen this?

I've moved it to Technical Issues.

Might you have a firefall on? Please check the Knowledge Base to turn it off:

some firewalls can corrupt (wreck) your downloads and it'll result in errors. It's happened to me before.

This is happening to me now. I don't understand the error at all and don't have a clue where to start to troubleshoot it.

I was having this problem where SL would give me a Critical Error that said "Unable to start networking. error 2".

Everything else on my computer was able to access the internet except for the game Dream of Mirror Online.

I got desperate and downloaded AVG Anti-Virus from www.download.com. It found a couple trojans! =O

Warning!!!
After it ran and "healed" the trojans I could no longer get online AT ALL!

Three files in particular had to be quarantined:
laf1.dll
laf2.dll
laf3.dll

These were in the Windows\system32\ directory so I knew they could be important. I borrowed a laptop to get online and looked it up. Well yeah... kinda. heh heh Sure enough the quarantine killed my internet. (A case of the cure being worse than the disease... though necessary.)

The fix (for me) was VERY easy, however. And I have the Lavasoft forums to thank for it. I found a thread with a fix here.

To save you some trouble...

If you're having XP Service Pack 2, do next please..

Go to start > run and type cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type next in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
hit enter.

Reboot your Computer.

This command only works for XP Service Pack 2 since this command is not supported by Service Pack 1.

So, check for viruses! Go get AVG if you have to. And IF quarantining the viruses knocks you offline completely try the directions above if you have XP Service Pack 2.
